Structural Engineer SR 2

Position Overview

The Structural Engineer 2 is responsible for performing structural engineering and design activities that support Southern Company's Transmission and Distribution Substation Design Group and also provide engineering support for the Transmission Line Design Group.

This position focuses on the structural analysis and design of steel and reinforced concrete structures, foundations, and related components for electrical substations and transmission facilities. The successful candidate will prepare engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and material requirements while ensuring compliance with company standards, applicable engineering codes, and safety requirements.

This role combines office, remote, and field responsibilities and offers opportunities to work on large-scale infrastructure projects that directly support the reliability of the electric power system.

Key Responsibilities

Structural Engineering & Design

  • Design and analyze structural steel and reinforced concrete components for transmission and distribution substations.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, specifications, construction packages, and material requirements.
  • Design new structures and evaluate modifications to existing facilities.
  • Perform reinforced concrete design for equipment foundations, structural foundations, and support structures.
  • Perform structural steel analysis and design for substation and transmission infrastructure.
  • Develop construction packages using CAD-based engineering tools and Southern Company design standards.

Engineering Analysis

  • Perform structural analysis for:
    • Steel structures
    • Reinforced concrete foundations
    • Equipment support structures
    • Transmission line structures
  • Evaluate loading conditions, including
    • Dead loads
    • Live loads
    • Wind loading
    • Seismic loading
    • Vibration effects
  • Perform foundation evaluations and structural assessments as required.

Project Coordination

  • Coordinate engineering activities with civil, structural, electrical, and construction teams.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary project meetings and design reviews.
  • Collaborate with project managers, construction services, field services, and maintenance personnel.
  • Communicate technical solutions to internal and external stakeholders.

Field Support

  • Conduct project site visits throughout various project phases, including:
    • Pre-construction meetings
    • Construction support
    • Post-construction inspections
  • Provide engineering support during field installations and construction activities.
  • Assist with resolving field engineering issues and construction questions.

Standards & Continuous Improvement

  • Support Southern Company's engineering standards and design standardization initiatives.
  • Participate in design reviews and quality assurance activities.
  • Work with manufacturers, vendors, and internal technical committees to resolve design and material issues.
  • Mentor junior engineers, designers, and drafters by providing technical guidance and knowledge transfer.

Safety & Quality

  • Promote a safety-first culture by leading through example.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable engineering standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Deliver high-quality engineering solutions that balance safety, quality, cost, and schedule objectives.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering required.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in structural steel and reinforced concrete design.
  • Experience in industrial and/or commercial structural engineering.
  • Experience performing engineering calculations and structural analysis.
  • Prior foundation design experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License.
  • Experience with seismic, wind, and vibration analysis.
  • Experience designing transmission line structures and foundations.
  • Experience supporting utility, energy, or infrastructure projects.
