Job Summary: We are looking for a skilled and safety-conscious Iron/Structural Welder to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for welding and assembling structural steel & precast components in accordance with engineering drawings, welding codes, and company standards. This position requires a high level of precision and attention to detail. The ideal candidate must also demonstrate a strong commitment to safety by following the proper industry procedures and wearing appropriate protective equipment when necessary.

Hours: A typical workweek is Monday through Friday from 7:00AM to 3:30PM, actual working hours and days may vary due to project deadlines; May require weekend or evening work at times.

Compensation: Starting at $26.00 per hour

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret Engineering Drawings: Read and understand blueprints and welding symbols to determine weld locations and specifications.
  • Prepare Materials: Align and position steel components using clamps, jigs, and fixtures before welding.
  • Execute Welds: Perform welds using MIG, TIG, or Stick processes as specified in design documents and AWS D1.1 standards.
  • Follow Joint Specifications: Apply correct joint types (e.g., snug-tightened, full penetration) and filler metals per WPS (Welding Procedure Specification).
  • Visual and Dimensional Checks: Ensure welds meet appearance and dimensional tolerances as defined by AWS D1.1 and AISC codes.
  • Report Discrepancies: Notify supervisors and engineers of any deviations or failed tests for corrective action.
  • Documentation: Furnish inspection reports to the project team and building officials as required.
  • Stay Current with AWS Standards: Ensure certifications are up to date and aligned with AWS D1.1 requirements for structural steel welding.
  • Participate in Recertification: Attend periodic training or testing to maintain certification status.
  • Recordkeeping: Maintain documentation of certifications and renewal dates for compliance audits.
  • Component Assembly: Fit and weld steel beams, columns, joists, and precast elements according to layout plans.
  • Use of Equipment: Operate forklifts, MEWPs, and rigging tools to position materials safely.
  • Safety Compliance: Wear appropriate PPE and follow safety protocols during welding and assembly tasks.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in structural welding, ironwork, or related construction trades.
  • Proficiency in SMAW (stick welding), especially in structural applications.
  • Certification in stick welding is preferred, but not required - willing to train the right candidate
  • Proficiency with hand tools and power tools commonly used in steel fabrication and erection.
  • Basic math skills for measurements and calculations
  • Blueprint reading skills, including the ability to interpret welding symbols and fabrication drawings a plus.
  • Experience with fitting and welding large steel components, including columns, beams, and trusses.
  • Ability to work at heights, on scaffolding, ladders, and aerial lifts as required.
  • Experience with crane operation is a plus.
  • Knowledge of welding safety procedures, and ability to follow all site safety requirements.
  • Physically fit and capable of lifting heavy materials, standing for long periods, and working in varying weather conditions.
  • Reliable transportation and availability for overtime, depending on project requirements.
  • Must be available to travel outside of Sioux Falls (approximately 20%).
