A Student, Medical Lab Technician (MLT) who excels in this role:
Phlebotomy: Perform phlebotomy procedures such as venipuncture, capillary sticks, heel sticks, blood culture collections, accurate, and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Specimen Accessioning: Accurately and completely accession specimens into the laboratory information system, accurately label specimens and distribute to appropriate section for testing.
Specimen Testing: Under direct supervision, may perform quality control testing and non-interpretive testing such as dipstick urines, load specimens on instruments for automated CBC's, automated chemistry, and coagulation analyses, performed waived testing (rapid kits such as HCG, Strep A, Influenza a/b).
Referencing Specimens: Send specimen to outside laboratories, ensuring accurate completion of batch logs or requisitions slips, and safe packaging of the specimen.
Inventory Control: Maintain collection area; inventory and stock supplies with assistance of techs as needed.
Reception/Clerical Duties: receive and process patients for testing using good customer service skills; register patients and/or specimens following established Admitting policies and procedures; provide appropriate documentation for completion of patient's medical record; accurately file reports and requisitions; answer telephone, handling inquiries appropriately using good customer service skills; assist in other duties as assigned.
Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement: Participate in activities to support the hospital in meeting API Proficiency Testing, and Joint Commission accreditation standards while adhering to billing compliance regulations.
Responsibilities: Knowledgeable with the ability to practice and teach Medicare Compliance. Knowledgeable with the ability to practice and teach CLIA 88 regulations. Knowledgeable concerning clinic laboratory billing to include CPT codes, ICD 10 codes and billing practices. The day-to-day duties of a Laboratory Assistance includes phlebotomy performance, complex analysis of microscopic, immunologic, biologic, bacteriologic, hematologic, and chemical tests, and their results.
Some tasks that the MLT In Training might be asked to perform could include:
a. Establishing and monitoring programs that ensure data accuracy
b. Ensures operation of analyzers, other laboratory equipment by calibrating; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
c. Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
d. Provides medical technology information by answering questions and requests.
e. Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
f. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending online educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
g. Maintains inter- and intradepartmental workflow by fostering a spirit of cooperation.
h. Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
i. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control and hazardous waste policies and protocols, following identification procedures.
j. Maintains patient confidence and protects the hospital by keeping information confidential.
k. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
Degree of Supervision Required: Direct supervision of testing activities by MT or MLT. General guidance and direction by Department Director, Supervisor/Section Heads, Medical Technologists, and/or Medical Laboratory Technicians for all other duties. The MLT In Training is expected to proceed on his/her own initiative, in compliance with policies, practices and procedures proscribed by the Laboratory Medical Director or Laboratory Director.

What we’re looking for
Education: Has completed one clinical rotation in an accredited MLT or MT program. Will complete additional specific duty related training on site.
Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) required
Licenses: N/A
Required Skills:
Familiarity with organization and functions of each hospital department Leadership ability, integrity, and initiative required.
Ability to problem solve effectively and handle stress in a positive manner.
Maintain harmonious relationships with nursing personnel, medical staff, hospital administration, and all hospital department.
