Substitute K-5 Tutor – Sunnyside Unified School District

Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Substitute Tutor to support students in Math and English Language Arts at the Elementary and Middle School levels within the Sunnyside Unified School District. This is an on-call position providing coverage when regularly scheduled tutors are absent.

Substitute tutors will step into scheduled sessions working with small groups of 3–5 students using curriculum and materials provided by Thrive Academics, ensuring lessons remain clear, engaging, and effective.

In this role, you will track and document student progress through our internal system, help students stay on track, and maintain a positive learning environment that supports growth and good behavior.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver structured, small-group tutoring sessions in Math and English Language Arts for students in groups of 3–5 when regularly scheduled tutors are unavailable.
• Foster a positive and focused learning environment that supports collaboration, engagement, and academic growth.
• Follow provided curriculum and adapt instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
• Monitor student progress and maintain accurate attendance and session documentation.
• Communicate regularly with the school coordinator and Thrive office staff via phone, text, and email.
• Participate in periodic training and check-ins to remain aligned with program expectations and instructional practices.

Position Requirements

Communication: Must be able to collaborate via phone and email to complete job requirements.

Education: 60 completed college credits toward a Math or Literacy degree, or educator certification, or passing the Arizona Para-Pro Assessment.

Skills: Comfortable working with children in a classroom setting.

Clearances & Requirements:

• Valid Arizona Fingerprint Card
• Negative TB test (within 4 years)
• Reliable transportation
• Proficient in Math and English Language Arts (K-6)
• Functional device (computer/laptop/tablet)

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $25.00 per hour
