Summer Camp Counselor

General Purpose:

Counselors serve as role models, mentors, and leaders, guiding campers through daily activities while fostering teamwork, creativity, and personal development. Their responsibilities include supervising campers, leading recreational and educational activities, ensuring safety, and promoting a positive camp culture. By providing support and encouragement, they help campers build confidence, develop social skills, and enjoy a rewarding summer experience.

Essential Duties and responsibilities:

· Supervise and engage with campers in daily activities, including sports, arts & crafts, nature exploration, and team-building exercises.

· Lead and participate in games, songs, and group discussions to promote a positive camp culture.

· Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers by enforcing camp rules and responding to any issues.

· Act as a positive role model, fostering a fun and inclusive environment.

· Assist in planning and organizing camp events and field trips.

· Communicate with parents and camp staff regarding camper progress and any concerns.

· Provide basic first aid and handle minor medical situations as needed (training provided).

  • Assist with daily camp setup, cleanup.

· Performs other duties as required.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College students or recent graduates preferred, particularly those studying education, recreation, child development, psychology, or related fields. High school students 16 years or older may also be considered.
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week for six (6) weeks of summer camp. (shifts vary between the hours of 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.). May be required to work longer due to traffic or time when field trips are taken.
  • Previous experience working with children (babysitting, coaching, tutoring, etc.) preferred.
  • Energetic, outgoing, and passionate about working with kids. Sports ability preferred.
  • Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment, and create a positive camp culture.
  • Ability to effectively work and communicate with City officials, co-workers, residents and the general public.
  • Be a positive reflection of the Department of Community Life and the city of Bedford Heights.

· Ability to obtain Red Cross Certificate in First Aid and CPR
