Primary Purpose:

Responsible for managing school bus drivers and monitors to ensure safe, efficient student transportation. Oversees performance, schedules routes, enforces safety regulations, conducts training, and addresses compliance and student welfare issues.

Qualifications:

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Ability to understand and execute detailed written or oral instructions
  • Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge in the operation and maintenance of commercial motor vehicles and all laws, regulations, and ordinances governing pupil transportation.
  • Knowledge of pupil transportation emergency procedures.
  • Skill in student management techniques, including special needs students.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work responsibilities.
  • Must be able to obtain Texas Association of Pupil Transportation Official Certification
  • Ability to communicate, direct, and supervise personnel
  • Ability to operate and oversee daily operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with campus principals
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents in a conflict resolution setting
  • Ability to pass the DOT Physical and complete the Texas School Bus Certification Program
  • Must pass randomly administered drug and alcohol tests (a refusal for drug and or alcohol test will be considered an automatic positive)

Experience/Requirements

  • Five years experience in transportation supervisory - preferred
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
  • Experience as a school bus driver
  • Strong understanding of transportation safety regulations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively manage drivers
  • Leadership abilities to motivate and train staff
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings and afternoons
  • Assist in the investigation of accidents involving WISD Transportation vehicles.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows/Google Suite, Office Professional and other various programs (GPS, Routing and Video Software)
  • Experience in State and Federal laws regarding the transportation of Special Needs and ESSA qualifying students

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Driver Supervision/Management

  • Regularly monitoring driver performance on the road through ride-alongs and reviewing vehicle logs to identify safety concerns.
  • Provide evaluators with constructive feedback on driver performance, highlighting strengths and addressing areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate in enforcing discipline for drivers and monitors - ensuring necessary intervention aligned with established district policies.
Assist drivers/monitors with concerns, student management, and daily operations of the department.

Training and Development

  • Assist with new driver training, covering safety procedures, vehicle operation, student management and district policies.
Assist with ongoing refresher training for existing drivers to maintain compliance with regulations.

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensuring drivers are adhering to all state and federal transportation regulations.
  • Assist with investigating accidents and incidents involving school buses, taking appropriate corrective actions.
  • Maintaining accurate records of driver performance, student management vehicle maintenance, and safety inspections.
Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Administrative Tasks

  • Assist with managing drivers and monitor schedules, including time off requests and substitutions.
Preparing reports on transportation operations and safety metrics for district leadership.

Other

  • Assist with participating in development of the district’s disaster plan and be prepared to take an active role in responding to emergencies as needed.
  • Operate a bus as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
