JOB SUMMARY

The Surgeon – Oral and Maxillofacial is responsible for providing specialized surgical care for patients requiring diagnostic evaluation and treatment of conditions affecting the mouth, jaw, face, and related structures. This role ensures high-quality, patient-centered care in accordance with clinical best practices, organizational policies, and regulatory standards. The Surgeon collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive treatment plans and may contribute to educational initiatives, clinical protocols, and quality improvement efforts that support the organization’s surgical and patient care goals.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Perform evaluations and consultations with patients to determine surgical oral health needs and develop appropriate treatment plans.
  • Collaborate with general dentists and other specialists to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
  • Documents and maintain accurate patient medical records, including notes related to appointments, diagnostic tests, treatments, and results.
  • Provides surgical care for patients of all ages, including those with medically complex conditions.
  • Formulates, discusses, and finalizes treatment plan options with patients to ensure informed decision-making.
  • Administers general and local anesthetics as required to facilitate surgical procedures safely and effectively.
  • Performs a variety of surgical procedures such as extractions, implant placements, biopsies, and removal of tumors or growths in the oral and facial regions.
  • Diagnoses and treats pathological conditions, prescribes medications for dental diseases, and takes dental radiographs as needed.
  • Treats infections affecting the oral cavity, jaw, face, and salivary glands.
  • Provides patient education and oral health instruction to promote optimal post-treatment outcomes.
  • Completes timely and thorough documentation to ensure patient records are accurate and current.
  • Trains staff on dental applications and procedures when necessary to maintain a knowledgeable and skilled team.
  • Responds to emergency patients and performs emergency procedures to alleviate pain and manage urgent conditions.
  • Performs duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and clinical protocols.
  • Acts as a clinical leader and resource, fostering a positive work environment and supporting departmental and organizational change initiatives.
  • Performs conscious sedation to enhance patient comfort during procedures.
  • Collaborates with other healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care across disciplines.
  • Proctors’ dental student externs in the delivery of oral surgery care, supporting their education and skill development.
  • Maintains strict adherence to scheduled work hours with regular and reliable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and/or DMD (Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Medicine).
  • Minimum of two years of experience as a physician.


CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES

  • Board certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Board of Medical Specialties (AOBMS).
  • Current and unrestricted applicable State MD/DO license.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification at time of hire, or within three months of employment.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License required with an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR), per FHC guidelines.
