Nature of Work

Under general supervision performs professional work of moderate difficulty in surveillance case work for probationers predominately evening and weekends and holidays; performs related work as assigned; establish and maintain a positive and healthy work environment.

The Mission of the Coconino County Adult Probation Department is to create a safer community by reducing the number of future crimes, thereby reducing the number of future victims. This is to be accomplished by providing to our clients individualized programming and supervision to include:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral education, treatment and supervision based upon individual assessment of risk and need.
  • Restorative justice to the community and victims.
  • Community and client involvement and collaboration.
  • Effective, quality-based methods of supervision.
  • Measurable processes and outcomes.

Note:
This position will be required to work a flexible schedule that includes night, weekend and holiday hours.

Typical Duties

(Illustrative Only)
  • Provides closely structured supervision of offenders
  • Monitors offenders at multiple sites
  • Prepares, collects and maintains reports, supervision information
  • Coordinates and cooperates with criminal justice agencies
  • Performs urinalysis and breath testing, searches, employment contacts, arrests, transportation and detention of violators
  • Prepares and presents court testimony
  • Participates in planning and evaluating offender progress

Essential functions of this position include: driving; walking; working with and around others; hearing and speech for ordinary conversation; touch and finger dexterity for computer work

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree in behavioral science or related field; OR one year experience as a surveillance officer; OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Must successfully complete a background investigation and criminal history check relevant to employment. Must achieve a certification of completion/proficiency of 40-hour Defensive Tactics Academy with annual 8–12-hour review. If SO chooses to be armed, must attend and pass 40-hour Firearms Academy and maintain a 20-hour annual “shoot” for recertification purposes; complete a minimum of 16 hours of on-going education within the judicial system certified by the Committee on Judicial Education and Training (COJET).

This position is safety sensitive.

This position is non-exempt from overtime.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of:

  • Surveillance, search, and restraint procedures
  • Criminal law and Title 13 (Adult Probation); Juvenile Justice System (Juvenile Probation)
  • Human behavior and various social, economic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Principles and techniques of crisis intervention in individual and family settings
  • Principles and practices of intensive probation and surveillance as applied to adult or juvenile probationers


Skill in:
  • Personal interaction
  • Use of written and electronic documentation


Ability to:
  • Provide effective surveillance and supervision to high-risk offenders
  • Operate a motor vehicle safely and in adverse weather conditions
  • Appropriately apply search and restraint procedures
  • Deal impartially with individuals of various socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Make sound independent decisions in the field in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Maintain records and reports
  • Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public
  • Follow written and verbal instructions
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Train other surveillance officers
