Job Purpose
The Sustainability Specialist is responsible for supporting the implementation of sustainability practices throughout the project's lifecycle. This includes ensuring compliance with sustainability standards, monitoring sustainability performance, and facilitating the achievement of environmental goals related to energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, and carbon reduction. The role requires close coordination with project teams, contractors, and other stakeholders to drive sustainable practices and help the project meet its sustainability certification targets.
Key Responsibilities
Sustainability Plan Implementation:
- Support the development and execution of the project's Sustainability Management Plan (CSMP).
- Implement sustainability initiatives in line with the project's sustainability goals.
- Monitor the progress of sustainability initiatives and ensure adherence to established targets.
Environmental Performance Monitoring:
- Track and report on key sustainability performance indicators such as energy consumption, water usage, waste diversion, and carbon emissions.
- Collect and analyze data related to the project's environmental impact and prepare periodic reports for stakeholders.
- Ensure the implementation of strategies to optimize resource usage and minimize environmental footprint.
Sustainability Audits and Compliance:
- Assist with internal and external sustainability audits to ensure compliance with applicable environmental regulations and standards (e.g., LEED, BREEAM).
- Help identify areas of non-compliance and work with relevant teams to implement corrective actions.
- Ensure that all documentation related to sustainability performance is properly maintained for audits and certification purposes.
Collaboration with Contractors and Stakeholders:
- Work closely with contractors, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure sustainability practices are being followed across all phases of the project.
- Support the communication of sustainability goals to project teams and stakeholders.
- Provide guidance and recommendations to contractors regarding sustainable materials, construction methods, and waste management practices.
Sustainability Reporting and Documentation:
- Prepare and submit progress reports on sustainability initiatives and performance to the Sustainability Manager.
- Assist in documenting sustainability efforts, including data tracking sheets, waste management records, and material tracking reports.
Training and Awareness:
- Assist in training project teams, contractors, and site personnel on sustainability best practices and environmental compliance requirements.
- Promote awareness of sustainability goals and the importance of sustainability measures throughout the project.
Continuous Improvement:
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of sustainability practices by identifying areas for optimization and innovation.
- Stay updated on the latest trends, technologies, and regulations related to sustainability in the construction and infrastructure sectors.
- Participate in industry forums and workshops to enhance knowledge and contribute to the development of best practices.
Skills
Required Qualifications:
Academic Credentials:
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Procurement, Environmental Science, Sustainability Management, or a related field.
- Additional certifications in sustainable procurement or environmental management (e.g., ISO 20400 - Sustainable Procurement) are advantageous.
Professional Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in procurement, supply chain management, or sustainability roles, preferably within construction, infrastructure, or large-scale projects.
- Experience with sustainable procurement strategies and sourcing eco-friendly materials.
- Familiarity with sustainability certifications and standards such as LEED, BREEAM, ISO 14001, and FSC.
Skills:
- Strong understanding of sustainable procurement practices and materials sourcing.
- Ability to assess and prioritize suppliers based on sustainability criteria.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence suppliers and stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple procurement activities simultaneously.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations, sustainability certifications, and ethical procurement practices.

- Sustainability and Procurement Certifications:
- ISO 20400 - Sustainable Procurement certification.
- LEED Green Associate or LEED AP - Certification in sustainable building practices.
- Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) - Certification in supply chain management.
- WELL AP - Certification for promoting health and wellness in building materials.
Other Relevant Certifications:
- ISO 14001 - Environmental Management Systems certification.
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certification - Certification for sustainable sourcing of wood and paper products.
- BREEAM Assessor - Certification for assessing sustainability, including procurement, in buildings.
Additional Duties:
- Stay informed about new trends in sustainable procurement, such as circular economy models and green product innovations.
- Contribute to internal sustainability initiatives, promoting the adoption of best practices across other departments.
- Participate in industry forums and sustainability conferences to expand knowledge and network with like-minded professionals.
