Swing Driver/Key Driver – 4-Day Workweek!

Terch & Associates, on behalf of Cloquet Sanitary Service, is searching for a Swing Driver/Key Driver (CDL Class B) to join a growing team!

Position Summary

The Swing Driver/Key Driver is a versatile CDL driver who provides route coverage across the operation by filling in for different routes and truck types (including automated side load and front load collection equipment, and other refuse/recycling vehicles as needed). This role ensures safe, efficient, customer-focused service while supporting the broader collection team.

Schedule: Shifts are typically 8–10 hours per day, 4 days per week (often early mornings, such as 5:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., depending on route coverage needs).

Job Duties

  • Safely drive and operate industry-specialized refuse and recycling trucks to collect and transport materials at residential neighborhoods and commercial businesses while navigating high traffic, congested roads, and alleyways.
  • Fill in across routes and equipment types as needed, including automated side load and front load collection vehicles.
  • Service assigned customer locations efficiently while leaving customer sites clean and free of debris.
  • Operate automated lifting/tipping devices to empty carts and containers; manage overflow materials when required.
  • Communicate customer needs and service issues to dispatch/office staff and the sales team.
  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report any defects needing correction.
  • Operate an electronic tablet for GPS navigation, route documentation, driver notes, and container photos (e.g., overloads or blocked containers).
  • Complete end-of-day documentation; clean out trucks daily and wash trucks weekly.
  • Assist other drivers and complete other collection-related tasks as directed to meet company needs.

Required Experience & Abilities

  • Ability to pass a DOT drug screen.
  • Valid Class B CDL with a clean driving record.
  • Meets company driving standards and complies with fleet safety policies.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and remain flexible as priorities change.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; professional, customer-focused approach.
  • Prior driving experience in waste management is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to learn multiple routes, equipment types, and operating procedures.

Physical Demands

  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and requires frequent climbing in and out of the truck.
  • Must be able to push/pull carts and containers (up to approximately 250 lbs, depending on route and equipment).
  • Must be able to bend, twist, and lift overflow materials (up to approximately 90 lbs at a time).
  • Frequent walking, reaching, and handling of carts/containers throughout the shift.

Job Specifics

Training will be provided on company routes, safety procedures, equipment operation, and the industry-specific tablet system for route and service documentation. This is a key coverage role: success depends on dependability, adaptability, and a consistent commitment to safe, efficient service.

Pay: From $32.00 per hour
