Description

Spokane Public Schools is seeking qualified candidates who are prepared and excited to provide a 21st century learning environment that effectively addresses the emerging necessity of social emotional supports and blending learning strategies.

  • FTE: 1.0
  • HOURS PER DAY: 7
  • CONTRACT TYPE: CONTINUING
  • ANTICIPATED START DATE: 2026-27 SCHOOL YEAR
  • Benefits-Medical/Dental/Vision through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) are provided for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year.
  • Additional benefits may include vacation, sick, personal days, and paid holidays.
  • Most positions have additional pay provisions above what is represented on the salary schedule, all in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreements as negotiated.

POSITION REQUIREMENT: This position requires you to meet Washington State CTE certification requirements, including documentation of 6,000 hours of paid occupational experience directly related to graphic design, digital media, visual communications, marketing, branding, print production, web design, photography, video production, or a closely related field. SALARY: Salary depends upon applicable prior certificated experience, approved credits, earned degrees, and the FTE of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Organize instructional programs within the prescribed curriculum to provide for individual differences.
  • Be able to effectively teach students of varying abilities.
  • Be able to maintain classroom discipline and use effective classroom management skills.
  • Utilize and maintain district/building curricular and student learning objectives.
  • Prepare and maintain long-range and weekly lesson plans.
  • Maintain appropriate student records.
  • Work as an effective member of the department to evaluate and improve the program.
  • Communicate and interpret school programs to patrons.
  • Communicate student progress to parents.
  • Be familiar with state essential leanings, district targets, qualifying standards, testing, etc.
  • Work as an effective member of the grade level, staff, and community to evaluate and improve student learning.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the building administration.

Qualifications

  • Meets Washington State CTE certification requirements, including documentation of 6,000 hours of paid occupational experience directly related to graphic design, digital media, visual communications, marketing, branding, print production, web design, photography, video production, or a closely related field.
  • Ability to integrate employability skills such as attendance, professionalism, communication, teamwork, customer service, creativity, problem-solving, and meeting deadlines into daily instruction.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive partnerships with local design firms, marketing agencies, print shops, media companies, businesses, industry partners, and postsecondary programs to support work-based learning and student career pathways.
  • Experience training, mentoring, supervising, or coaching others; experience working with high school students, interns, apprentices, or entry-level employees preferred.
  • Knowledge of digital lab, studio, equipment, and classroom safety procedures, including appropriate use of computers, cameras, printers, production equipment, online platforms, copyrighted materials, and digital media tools.
  • Recent industry experience in graphic design, digital media, visual communications, branding, marketing, print production, web design, photography, video production, or related creative industry work.
  • Knowledge and experience using current industry software, tools, and platforms, such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Canva, Figma, or other design-related applications.
  • Ability to teach students the design process, including research, ideation, sketching, layout, typography, color theory, branding, critique, revision, production, client communication, and portfolio development.
  • Demonstrates classroom management procedures that provide for large groups, small groups, and individuals, and creates an environment conducive to learning, creativity, collaboration, and productivity.
  • Uses appropriate disciplinary procedures, establishes clear parameters for student behavior, responds properly when problems occur, and helps students develop self-discipline, professional habits, and workplace readiness.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral form.
  • Flexible in learning new concepts, cooperates with others, and adapts to a variety of assignments, technologies, student needs, and program expectations.
  • Enthusiastic and displays an overall optimism toward teaching, student learning, creativity, and career preparation.
  • Assesses the needs of students, prescribes and implements effective lessons to meet students’ needs through the use of appropriate, current, and industry-aligned instructional strategies.
  • Gains the respect and confidence of students, parents, and staff through modeling appropriate demeanor, behavior, professionalism, and attire.
  • Sets and attains a high level of expectations with a commitment to using available resources so that student accomplishment, growth, and career readiness occur.
  • Develops favorable relationships with students; listens to, cares for, and works collaboratively with them.
  • Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, different learning styles, and various disabilities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to learn new ideas and skills and to solve problems; the possession of a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 is expected. This requirement may be waived if an inadequate pool of fully qualified applicants for a specific position exists.
  • Aware of current educational developments, industry trends, and applications; works collaboratively with others; believes in the importance of education; and is interested in the welfare and success of all students.
  • Uses democratic processes to work out problems in a supportive, respectful, and understanding manner.
  • Integrates technology into planning, instruction, student projects, assessment, communication, and record-keeping activities.
  • Knowledge of effective teaching strategies related to the appropriate age of instruction. Demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge in a classroom or studio-based learning environment.

  • Work Schedule – Days and hours (listed above) are subject to change depending on program and district needs.
  • Stipends, Leave Accruals and Holidays – Stipends, leaves and paid holidays are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement (https://www.spokaneschools.org/Page/314) as negotiated.

When employees meet plan requirements and retire, they are guaranteed a monthly benefit for the rest of their life from the employer-funded pension.
