Tech Help Intern - East Lansing Public Library

The East Lansing Public Library is seeking a tech-savvy and patient intern to provide direct technology assistance to library patrons and support our public computing services.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

  • Provide friendly, one-on-one technology assistance to patrons on a walk-up or appointment basis.
  • Assist patrons with basic computer tasks, including email, web browsing, document creation (Microsoft Office, Google Docs), and printing.
  • Help patrons navigate and use library digital resources, such as e-books, audiobooks, digital magazines, and online databases.
  • Offer support for personal devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops (e.g., connecting to Wi-Fi, downloading apps, basic troubleshooting).
  • Serve as a first point of contact for troubleshooting public-facing library devices including computers, printers, and photocopiers.
  • Assist in setting up library technology for programs and workshops.
  • Document common patron issues and help develop solutions and help guides.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in a public service environment, develop teaching and communication skills, and learn about the technology needs of a diverse community.

SCHEDULE

  • Approximately 3-4 shifts per week, including evenings and weekends.
  • Shifts are scheduled between the hours of 9:00 am and 9:00 pm.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:
Current enrollment in or recent graduation from a program related to Information Technology, Computer Science, or a similar field.

Strong customer service orientation and patience when working with learners of all skill levels.

Proficiency with common computer applications, operating systems (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android), internet browsers, and mobile devices.

Flexible availability for scheduling.

PREFERRED:
Familiarity with library digital resources (e.g., Libby, Hoopla).

Experience in tutoring, teaching, or providing one-on-one technology assistance.

Special Requirements

Ability to sit and use computers for extended periods.

Ability to occasionally lift and move computer equipment weighing up to 25 lbs.
