Technical Design Engineer (Toy Design)

The Role

We’re seeking a Design Engineer who loves toys as much as we do!

In this role, you’ll take product concepts created by our Product Design team and transform them into structurally sound, production-ready building toy models using professional 3D modeling and design software. You’ll evaluate designs for strength, stability, durability, and ease of assembly while creating clear, intuitive building instructions that make the building experience fun and satisfying.

You’ll collaborate with our Sr. Product Designer and internal teams to refine designs, improve connection methods, create custom elements, and ensure every set is ready for manufacturing.

This role is perfect for someone with a strong engineering mindset, sharp attention to detail, and a passion for building systems, who enjoys solving technical challenges behind great toy design.

Key Responsibilities

• Evaluate and refine building block models created by our Design team.
• Identify and resolve design issues such as weak connections, floating parts, potential defects, age range usability concerns, fragile assemblies, or difficult build sequences.
• Design and develop custom injection-molded elements specific to product requirements.
• Use 3D modeling tools to test, iterate, and strengthen models before production.
• Break complex builds into logical sub-assemblies to improve the building experience.
• Create clear, professional step-by-step building instructions.
• Ensure designs are structurally sound, practical to assemble, and ready for manufacturing.
• Collaborate with our design team to refine models while maintaining the intended aesthetic and playability.
• Support final design verification before production.

Qualifications

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent (degree in engineering, industrial design, product design, or related fields preferred).
• 5+ years experience in toy design, product design engineering, or similar hands-on product development roles.
• Strong understanding of building block connection systems or similar modular construction systems.
• Ability to evaluate designs for structural integrity, stability, durability, and assembly flow.
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving mindset.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Mac OS.
• Genuine passion for toys and building block design.

Bonus Skills (Nice-to-Haves)

• Mechanical engineering knowledge.
• Experience creating building instructions or technical assembly guides.
• Experience developing custom molded parts or product components.
• Graphic design skills using Adobe Illustrator.
• Experience designing building block sets or construction toys.
