Technical Services Librarian

FULL TIME 40 HOURS/WEEK


SUMMARY:

This position performs various functions as a professional member of the Technical Services department. Responsibilities include library materials acquisition and providing bibliographic access to library materials.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Submits library material orders to vendors, accurately enters order information into the acquisition module of the library’s integrated library system (ILS), processes any returns for damaged or defective materials, receives and invoices new materials in the ILS, and serves as liaison to staff for inquiries about ordering and order status.
  • Provides timely, accurate bibliographic access to library materials by performing copy and original cataloging for print material, following local, national, and international standards and rules using the cataloging module of the library’s ILS and OCLC Connexion.
  • Sets holdings in OCLC WorldCat when downloading bibliographic records for new materials.
  • Resolves cataloging and classification issues that arise. Reclassifies portions of the collection as needed.
  • Receives shipments/deliveries for the technical services department and other library departments.
  • Maintains technical services department supply inventory; orders and receives supplies on a periodic basis.
  • Assists with bibliographic database maintenance and Technical Services related projects as assigned. Assists with maintaining departmental documentation.
  • Maintains current awareness of library trends, developments, and new technology by attending training sessions, professional conferences, and utilizing other educational resources.
  • Performs other functions assigned to position to ensure effective and smooth continuity of operations and transactions in the best interest of the library.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION:

Master's degree (ALA-accredited MLS degree or equivalent) and one year related experience. Must possess or be able to acquire a State of Indiana Librarian Certificate 3. Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license.


COMPUTER SKILLS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of: Spreadsheet Software (Excel); Word Processing Software (Word); Electronic Mail Software (Outlook); Presentation software (PowerPoint); Integrated Library System (ILS), preferably Sirsi Symphony Workflows and Enterprise; OCLC Connexion; Ingram ipage and various vendor software related to technical services.


OTHER SKILLS:

Knowledge of library materials acquisitions, Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Dewey Decimal classification system, MARC bibliographic records, and OCLC cataloging services.

  • The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • The employee will frequently move book carts up to 200 pounds.

The work environment is a general office/library environment.
