Temporary Facilities Technician

City Harvest is New York City’s first and largest food rescue organization. We rescue nutritious, high-quality food that would otherwise go to waste and deliver it for free to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, community partners, and our own Mobile Markets® across the five boroughs. In response to the urgent and ongoing demand for food assistance and a commitment to sustainability, this year we will rescue more than 86 million pounds of food and deliver it to New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity.

The Temporary Facilities Technician (FT), under the supervision of the Senior Building Manager (SBM), is responsible for performing preventive, routine, and corrective maintenance work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work responsibilities can include, but are not limited to, the following building maintenance work types:

  • Minor electrical like replacing light bulbs, ballast, light fixtures, outlets, intercoms, and identifying and reporting unsafe electrical conditions.
  • Minor plumbing such as replace and repair plumbing fixtures that includes sinks, toilets, drainpipes, flushometers, diaphragms and vacuum breakers, faucets, showerheads, and spigots.
  • HVAC tasks include replacing filters and belts, cleaning condenser coils, and adjusting, resetting, and replacing thermostats.
  • Carpentry work including repairs to cabinets, furniture, doors.
  • Sheetrock installation, wall resurfacing
  • Painting work which includes sanding, priming and painting
  • Locksmith work which includes installing and resetting locking cylinders and cutting keys as needed.
  • Flooring and tile repair or replacement.
  • Landscaping such as weeding and cleaning tree and flower beds, mulching and trimming trees
  • Flooring and tile repair and replacement. Also includes patching concrete
  • Performs custodial duties, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, rubbish removal, floor stripping, waxing, buffing, and power washing.
  • Event support which can include set up and break down of furniture, usher deliveries, and operate the freight elevator.
  • Assist custodial and security vendors as necessary. FT will support event setups and monitor building-related inventory.


Administrative Duties:

  • Receives and coordinates all facilities services through a work order software system. Responsibilities include:
  • Receiving and acknowledging requests.
  • Carries out work orders assigned by the SBM.
  • Following up as necessary.
  • Ensuring that work orders are accurate and include all necessary information needed.
  • Closing out the requests when needed.
  • Collecting more information as necessary through inspection
  • Escort contractors when on-site as needed.
  • Observes and ensures adherence to safety protocols, OSHA guidelines, and procedures in all work operations.
  • Follow quality standards and health and safety regulations.
  • Familiarize and follow City Harvest policies and procedures.


Communication Duties:

  • Maintain regular communication with leadership, team members, and an open and collaborative approach to colleagues.
  • Complete and submit requisitions for supplies and equipment to SBM.
  • Always communicate professionally in both verbal and written forms.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings, training sessions, and supervision meetings.
  • Respond promptly to all communications, including telephone calls, emails, and other verbal and written inquiries.
  • Always maintain a professional level of communication
  • Carry out other relevant duties and activities as needed and always perform all other duties as assigned and as required.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • 3+ years of hands-on building maintenance experience
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
  • Technical knowledge in general building repairs as outlined in duties, and preferred knowledge in HVAC preferred
  • Strong customer service and willingness to flex between work assignments based on need.
  • Bilingual - Spanish language a plus.


Licenses (a plus)

  • OSHA license is a plus.
  • CPR and First Aid are a plus.
  • FDNY license(s) a plus
  • Certification in HVAC and Refrigeration preferred
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is preferred.


Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, push, pull, lift to 50 lbs., carry, climb stairs and ladders frequently, type, write, read, speak, see, and hear. An ability to work in tall and cramped spaces
