Test Engineer

Lynchburg, United States

Are you energized by variety, collaboration, and hands-on problem solving? Do you thrive when every day brings new challenges and opportunities to make an impact? We're looking for a Test Engineer who sees constant action and cross-team collaboration as exciting features, not distractions.

Join a company where your technical skills meet real-world impact. At EDM, we're 100% employee-owned, which means we succeed together. This isn't a role where you'll sit at a desk designing in isolation – this is where engineering meets the action. You'll be the go-to technical expert on our production floor, working directly with operators, customers, and every department to keep products moving and problems solved.

We need someone who can manage multiple priorities, provide technical support to different teams throughout the day, and thrive in a fast-paced environment where their skills are consistently needed. If you prefer predictable days and long stretches of uninterrupted project work, this isn’t the right fit. But if you want to be at the center of operations, making an immediate impact on production and customer success, this role is for you.

Primary Responsibilities

The Hub of Technical Operations

  • Serve as the primary technical resource for production, quality, customer service, and purchasing teams – all in the same day
  • Provide real-time test support and troubleshooting expertise to keep production moving
  • Switch gears quickly between customer requests, production emergencies, and development projects
  • Thrive in an environment where being needed by multiple teams is the norm, not the exception

Hands-On Test Development & Support

  • Design, develop, and assemble test fixtures and automated test systems (hardware and software)
  • Create and maintain test procedures that production teams can execute reliably
  • Jump in to diagnose equipment issues, perform root-cause analysis on failures, and implement solutions on the spot
  • Update and improve existing test procedures based on real production feedback

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner directly with customers to define test requirements and solve technical challenges
  • Work alongside Quality to identify trends and resolve customer issues
  • Support operations teams with immediate technical expertise when they need it most
  • Coordinate with purchasing on component and equipment specifications

Continuous Improvement & Documentation

  • Drive projects to improve test efficiency and reduce production bottlenecks
  • Maintain clear documentation while staying focused on production support
  • Balance long-term improvements with daily operational needs
  • Track and communicate technical activities across multiple stakeholders

Key Requirements

  • Embedded programming (C / C++, Arduino, firmware development)
  • Python scripting for test automation
  • PCB design and layout using Altium Designer
  • 3D CAD modeling using Fusion 360 and additive manufacturing (3D printing)
  • Familiarity with machine shop tools and mechanical prototyping
  • Networking knowledge (Ethernet, TCP/IP configuration, switches/routers)
  • SQL/database experience for managing and analyzing logged test data
  • Strong aptitude for creative problem solving, especially in developing mechanical fixtures, jigs, and custom test tools

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Electronics Technology, Electrical Technology, or related technical field required
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering preferred, but equivalent experience valued
  • Technical certification programs or military electronics training also considered
  • Previous experience in manufacturing, production support, or test engineering is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in dynamic, interrupt-driven environments
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences

Why This Role is Different

This position is perfect for the engineer who:

  • Wants to see their work make an immediate impact
  • Enjoys being at the center of operations rather than on the sidelines
  • Values variety and human interaction over heads-down project work
  • Takes pride in being the person everyone counts on for technical solutions
  • Sees "wearing many hats" as an opportunity, not a burden

If you're looking for a traditional engineering role with long stretches of uninterrupted design time, this isn't it. But if you want to be where the action is – solving real problems, supporting real people, and making a real difference every single day – we want to talk to you.
