Job Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and highly organised Theatre Technical Manager to oversee the daily operations of our theatre facilities. The Technical Manager will oversee the smooth technical operation of the theatre while maintaining flexibility to accommodate production needs and the theatre’s event schedule.

Although the position is not full-time, the Technical Manager will occasionally remain available on a paid standby basis to provide advice or remote assistance to staff when required. A key part of the role involves maintaining and updating a comprehensive technical inventory and reference documentation for Duty Managers and other staff to refer to when the Technical Manager is not on site.

Beyond production-to-production technical oversight, the Technical Manager will offer hands-on support and guidance, helping to develop their technical confidence and knowledge. They will also contribute to improving systems, ensuring equipment is well-maintained, and upholding best practice in health and safety.

This role is well-suited to someone who enjoys both the technical and collaborative sides of theatre-making, someone who can balance independent work with being a supportive, knowledgeable presence for the wider team.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all technical aspects of productions and events, ensuring smooth, safe, and efficient delivery.
  • Act as the main point of contact for visiting companies, meeting their technical needs within venue capabilities.
  • Coordinate get-ins, fit-ups, and get-outs, managing technical schedules with the General Manager and production teams.
  • Supervise and assist GM in scheduling technical staff, casual crew, and freelancers as required. Manage or assist in sourcing Duty Tech to operate lighting, sound, and AV equipment during tech and occasional performances as required.
  • Support the creative and technical needs of artists, directors, and producers using the space.
  • Provide occasional training and guidance on technical systems and safe working practices.
  • Collaborate closely with the General Manager and Front of House team to ensure seamless transitions between shows and events.
  • Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety regulations and best practices across all technical operations.
  • Conduct and maintain up-to-date risk assessments for the venue and productions.
  • Promote safe working practices and guide staff and visiting companies on proper equipment use.
  • Maintain and organise all technical equipment, tools, and spaces to ensure the theatre remains performance-ready.
  • Coordinate repairs, maintenance, and replacements within agreed budgets, keeping accurate inventory records.
  • Act as the venue’s Fire and Health & Safety representative when required.
  • Manage technical budgets and provide input on in-house production costs when required.
  • Maintain technical documentation, venue specifications, and up-to-date plans.
  • Attend staff meetings and contribute to the ongoing improvement of venue procedures and operations.

Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Technical Manager, Duty Technician, or Technician within a theatre or live performance venue.
  • First Aid, Fire Safety, or Health & Safety training (or willingness to complete).
  • Experience working in a small or independent venue.
  • Basic set construction, or maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of projection or video systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of lighting (ETC systems), sound (QLab, mixing desks), and AV equipment.
  • Experience managing get-ins, fit-ups, and technical rehearsals.
  • Excellent understanding of Health & Safety practices in a theatre environment.
  • Practical knowledge of risk assessments, PAT testing, and safe rigging procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced, creative environment.
  • Strong communication and people skills, with a collaborative and flexible attitude.

This role offers an exciting opportunity for a creative professional passionate about arts management and multimedia production to contribute to our vibrant cultural programme.
