JOB TITLE: Therapeutic Teacher- Preschool DEPT: Early Learning Division

JOB SUMMARY: The Therapeutic Teacher is responsible for the planning, implementation, and supervision of a trauma-informed therapeutic classroom serving young children impacted by trauma, abuse, neglect, and/or involvement with the Department of Children and Families (DCF). This position integrates developmentally appropriate early childhood education practices with therapeutic, trauma-responsive strategies to promote children’s social-emotional development, safety, regulation, and school readiness.
CHILDREN SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITY: Responsible for child supervision and for keeping children safe.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provide a nurturing, structured, and emotionally safe learning environment by utilizing trauma-informed strategies, including co-regulation, de-escalation techniques, and restorative practices.

Responsible for the supervision of classroom teaching staff, volunteers, and interns in their assigned duties.

Supports classroom staff in implementing therapeutic and behavioral strategies aligned with individualized plans and therapeutic goals in collaboration with mental health and special education professionals.

Ensure appropriate room coverage and maintain a safe indoor and outdoor learning environment at all times.

Maintains primary responsibility for active supervision of children at all times, ensuring their safety, well-being, and emotional security in accordance with the Head Start Performance Standards, state licensing regulations, and therapeutic program expectations.

Individualize instruction based on children’s developmental levels and identified needs.
- Responsible for the development and periodic review of individualized educational plans for each child.

Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, and resources that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned children.

Using a strength-based approach, collaborates closely with mental health consultant, Family Advocate, other Alliance staff, and families.

Responsible for completion of Home Visits (minimum of 2 per program year), daily attendance, case notes, and reports as required and data entry into Child Plus, Teaching Strategies Gold, or other designated database.

Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case reviews, and professional development and planning sessions.

Other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

A Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a non-ECE Bachelor’s degree with 12 credits in ECE. Six months or more of classroom experience in ECE setting preferred.

Demonstrated experience working with children impacted by trauma, abuse, and/or neglect.

Experience in a therapeutic, special education, mental health, or Head Start setting preferred.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care, social-emotional development, and behavior support strategies.

Strong organizational, documentation, and time-management skills.

Proficient in basic computer applications.

Commit to continuous improvement by attending trainings and professional development opportunities as desired or as assigned.

Bilingual abilities are helpful but not required.
