JOB TITLE: Sawmill Railcar & Scale Operations Technician (Cross - Training Role)
DEPARTMENT: Operations/Shipping & Receiving (Sawmill)
REPORTS TO: Oren Hall
Job Summary: The Railcar & Scale Operations Technician supports sawmill shipping and receiving by performing railcar inspections, truck scale operations, and related documentation to ensure safe, accurate, and compliant movement of raw materials and finished products. This position will also be cross-trained in additional sawmill operations and yard functions to provide flexible coverage and support continuous production.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Railcar Inspection & Rail Operations
Truck Scale (Weighmaster) Operations
Operate the truck scale system to weigh inbound/outbound trucks accurately.
Verify load documentation (BOLs, tickets, purchase orders, delivery paperwork) and enter data into scale software.
Communicate with drivers regarding scale procedures, traffic flow, and site safety requirements.
Maintain accurate records for weights, product codes, customer/vendor details, and shipment status.
Identify discrepancies (over/under weights, incorrect product, missing paperwork) and escalate for resolution.
Shipping / Receiving & Yard Support
Coordinate with shipping, production, and yard teams to prioritize loading/unloading needs.
Assist with inventory movement tracking and basic yard organization tasks as assigned.
Support safety checks and housekeeping in scale house, rail area, and yard.
Cross-Training & Other Duties
Participate in structured cross-training for additional sawmill areas such as:
Yard operations and logistics coordination
Loader/forklift support (if certified)
Shipping paperwork and customer dispatch coordination
Basic quality checks and inventory tracking
Perform other tasks as assigned to support mill operations and coverage needs.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED (preferred).
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain detailed records.
Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and around moving equipment.
Basic computer skills (data entry, email, scale software training provided).
Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in railcar inspection, logistics, shipping/receiving, scale house operations, or industrial manufacturing.
Forklift/loader experience (or willingness to train/certify).
Familiarity with BOLs, receiving documents, and inventory/shipping systems.
Physical & Work Requirements
Ability to walk uneven surfaces (yard/rail area), climb steps/ladders on railcars when required, and maintain balance near equipment.
Lift up to 50 lbs occasionally and perform frequent standing/walking.
Must be able to wear required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe footwear, high-visibility vest).
Safety & Compliance Expectations
Follow all facility safety rules, rail safety requirements, and traffic patterns.
Stop work and report hazards, near misses, or incidents immediately.
Maintain accurate documentation for weights, inspections, and shipments.
Schedule
Full-time; overtime, weekends, or rotating shifts may be required based on shipping/production demands.
