Thrift Store Assistant Manager

The Thrift Store Assistant Manager supports the store's day-to-day functions, including sorting items, stocking the sales floor, accepting donations, and serving customers. The Assistant Manager assumes a leadership role in directing staff and volunteers and ensuring store operations run smoothly. As a 501(c)3 organization, CRITI relies on public support and this position supports our ongoing fundraiser - Chattanooga Room In The Inn Thrift Store.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Greet customers and ascertain what each customer wants or needs in person and by telephone
• Recommend, select, and help locate or obtain merchandise based on customer needs and desires
• Compute sales prices, total purchases, and receive and process cash or credit card payments
• Refresh merchandise racks and keep fitting rooms, cash register area, and overall sales floor clean and clear of clutter
• Sort, price, tag, and stock donated goods and assist in maintaining seasonal merchandise stock
• Provide direction, support, and mentoring to volunteers and staff in alignment with store standards and expectations
• Maintain knowledge of current sales and promotions, policies regarding payment and exchanges, and security practices
• Generate reports and maintain accurate records related to sales and cash handling
• Count down the register at the end of each shift and ensure accurate reconciliation
• Prepare and make bank deposits in accordance with established cash handling procedures
• Serve as keyholder and open or close the store independently as needed
• Direct staff and volunteers in the Store Manager's absence to ensure store standards and customer experience expectations are maintained
• Identify and communicate operational needs, concerns, or opportunities to the Store Manager proactively
• Support the Store Manager in onboarding and training new staff and volunteers on store policies and procedures
• Uphold and model CRITI's customer experience standards and core values at all times

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum two years of customer service experience
• Minimum one year of retail or supervisory experience
• Commitment to the CRITI mission
• Experience in the retail industry
• Reliable, trustworthy, and able to handle financial responsibilities independently

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated decision-making skills and ability to take initiative in a leadership capacity when needed
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to direct and support a team effectively
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently and with minimal guidance
• Open-minded, collaborative attitude
• Basic computer and math skills
• Ability to lift fifty pounds and consistently move, talk, hear, bend, kneel, grab, climb, crouch, and stand for long periods of time

Work Environment

Work is carried out in a thrift store where various items in various conditions are donated. You may come in contact with donated items that are dirty, mildewed, smelly, wet, smoke damaged, or otherwise not in favorable condition such as urine soaked, bug infested, etc. There may be some exposure to allergens and health considerations may need to be taken.
