Job Summary
Tile and Spouting in Grain Facilities
In grain handling systems, spouting refers to the network of pipes, chutes, and transitions that move bulk grain from storage bins or elevators to processing, feeding, or discharge points. These are typically round or square cross-sections made of steel, aluminum, or other durable materials, joined by flanges, clamps, or welds IMEG Corp.. Because grain is a dry bulk solid, gravity flow is the primary method of transfer, and spouting design must account for the material’s angle of repose, flow rate, moisture content, abrasiveness, and bulk density to ensure efficient and damage-free movement IMEG Corp..
Spouting systems often include:
- Transitions (elbows, reducers, collectors)
- Flow retarders and cushion boxes to reduce impact on sensitive grains
- Letdown ladders to control velocity
- Adjustable elbows and square spouting for precise routing LCDM+1
To protect these components from abrasion and corrosion, they are frequently lined with wear-resistant materials. Common lining options include:
- Ceramic tile liners – Highly abrasion-resistant, corrosion-resistant, and impact-dampening. They are used in transitions, elbows, square spouting, valves, and other high-wear areas. Ceramic tiles help maintain smooth grain flow, reduce noise and vibration, and extend equipment life LCDM+1.
- Urethane liners – Offer excellent wear and impact resistance, available in various formulations for different grain types. They can be chip-reinforced for extreme abrasion and are often used in conjunction with ceramic tiles for maximum protection IBT Industrial Solutions.
- Other abrasion linings – Some spouting systems are lined with urethane, ceramic, or other abrasion-resistant coatings to improve flow and reduce maintenance AGI.
Why tile and spouting matter:
- Durability – Ceramic and urethane linings protect steel from rapid wear, reducing downtime and replacement costs.
- Flow control – Smooth, non-abrasive surfaces help maintain grain quality and prevent build-up.
- Flexibility – Ceramic tiles can be cut to fit complex shapes, allowing precise installation in transitions and elbows LCDM.
- Noise and vibration reduction – Ceramic linings dampen impact noise, improving working conditions LCDM.
