About the School
The Discovery School is a private, non-profit school that offers a unique educational experience through a gradual evolution from pure Montessori, to a blended curriculum, to pure International Baccalaureate (IB) over the course of the child's academic career, serving children ages 18-months through eighth grade.
Through a progressive and internationally-minded framework, students receive a firm foundation in academic skills and participate in a wide variety of enrichment opportunities from a dedicated and caring faculty. Students in our toddler and primary program engage in learning in a Montessori prepared environment with Montessori trained teachers. Students in our elementary school are a part of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP). Our middle school seeks to challenge students with academic rigor in a low-pressure environment.

Summary of Position:
The Discovery School Toddler Team Associate Teacher understands and promotes the school’s mission, vision, core values, and policies both within and outside the immediate school community. The Toddler Team Associate Teacher assists the Lead Teacher in preparing and maintaining the indoor and outdoor environments. The Toddler Team Associate Teacher is responsible for supporting a classroom/instructional program that embodies the Montessori methodology while respecting the children's individual needs in accordance with the school’s mission and vision. Associates is primarily responsible for student hygiene and diapering.
It is essential that the expectations of both the Lead Teacher and Toddler Team Associate Teacher are consistent. Since the Lead Teacher will create a peaceful atmosphere, the Toddler Team Associate Teacher must become familiar with and imitate the teacher’s model. The Toddler Team Associate Teacher is responsible for communication that supports an understanding of the school’s program, develops positive relationships within the school community, and protects the privacy and confidentiality of each student and family in the school community.
The Toddler Team Associate Teacher is expected to be prompt in morning arrival, with a cheerful disposition and a love of children. The Toddler Team Associate will support a variety of classrooms with a variety of tasks. The Team Associate must be flexible and open to feedback.
This job requires the employee to spend the majority of work hours actively attending to young children. This will include but is not limited to standing, bending at the waist, kneeling, sitting, and lifting. The Primary Team Associate Teacher will be flexible, as the staffing needs will vary.
Normal Hours:
- Monday through Friday when school is in session, 10:00 am through 5:30 pm.
- Serve as a Toddler Team Associate
- Hours required and deemed necessary by the Director of Lower School, and Head of School.
- Associate Teachers may be required to work on days when students are not in (full) attendance to support the Toddler Program and/or other programs. These days will be confirmed just prior to these events.
- Associate Teachers may also be asked to work evenings to provide childcare to support the Toddler program and/or other programs.
Assist the Lead Teacher as directed in:
- The preparation, care, and maintenance of the environments, i.e. maintaining a safe, orderly environment and keeping it clean and in good condition.
- The preparation and maintenance of classroom materials. Regarding “taking work home” (including pet care), it is the responsibility of the Lead Teacher, rather than the Associate, to make arrangements for tasks that are not able to be completed within the Associate’s regular work hours, i.e. Associate’s work outside his/her regular work hours requires prior approval by the Associate Head of School or the Head of School.
- Working with individual and small groups of children.
- Supervising students inclusive of managing snack/lunch, supply refills, assisting an injured child, dressing/undressing children, and diapering/toileting as necessary.
- Independent supervision of children while in Outdoor Environment.
- Helping to maintain strong relationships with the parents, which are characterized by mutual respect and goodwill.
- Helping with the observation of students and maintenance of current, accurate classroom records.
- Assist with the execution of Emergencies and Emergency Drills per the established protocol.
The Associate:
- Immediately corrects and/or reports safety issues, accidents, and incidents to the Lead Teacher and/or the Director of Lower School.
- Is directly responsible for cleaning the environment according to Lead Teacher directives, and properly storing all classroom supplies.
- Monitors and assists children with work, self-care, and social relationships/interactions with peers.
- Per Lead Teacher’s direction, assists with arrivals and dismissals as required and with strict adherence to Emergency Contact protocol, including completing electronic attendance records according to policy.
- Is responsible for the safety of the children left in his/her charge, until dismissed to a responsible adult. No child will ever be left unsupervised. Teachers are responsible for the appropriate treatment and well-being of all children, based on respect and consistent with the teachings of Montessori.
- Models the Lead Teacher’s method of interacting with children and adults, per Discovery’s policies, including respectful communication and positive directives and phrasing.
- Is required to attend Full Staff Meetings and any other meetings as and when requested.
- Assists with other projects, programs, and planning as assigned or requested by the leadership of the school.
- Shares questions and observations with the Lead Teacher.
- Establishes positive relationships with students which, while recognizing the differing roles of adult and child, are characterized by mutual respect and goodwill.
- Notifies the Director of Lower School, and/or Head of School, immediately of professional difficulties with children, parents, or staff, and/or personal difficulties that may affect the Associate Teacher’s role/responsibilities.
- Protects the peace and privacy of the children at work. Will constantly observe the children and encourage them towards independence and confidence through work. Once a child is engaged, it is the Associate’s job to ‘disappear’ and move to the next task.
- Collaborates with colleagues and the school’s leadership in the design and implementation of innovation within the context of the overall program of the school and Mission.
- Models integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity, and respect for all persons as well as an appreciation for racial, cultural, and gender issues and diversity.
- Participates in school functions, including but not limited to Open Houses, Curriculum Nights, and Parent Orientations.
Aftercare Accountabilities:
- Verifies that children are picked up by a person on the approved pick-up list. This may include checking identification and calling parents if a new or unknown person arrives for pick-up.
- Supervises student interactions and ensures that students are safely using all materials.
- Ensures environment is clean to facilitate morning set up the next day.

- Responsible for keeping the Director of Student Experience and/or Head of School updated on events, personal and professional issues, schedule, and curricular coordination that could impact their performance.
- Enthusiastically supports new initiatives.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Student of Experience and/or Head of School.
- Manages communication between Classroom Teachers and parents and caregivers.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, Bachelor's degree in education a bonus but not required.
- Experience with children between 18 months and 35 months is preferred but not required.
- Experience with Montessori and/or progressive learning approaches is preferred but not required.
- Comfortable with the integration of technology as a tool enabling learning.
- Deep capability to engage in differentiated instruction strategies for reading and writing.
- Exceptionally strong spoken and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Adept at communicating Discovery’s story to various constituencies.

Work Authorization: The candidate must be authorized to work in the US.
Compensation: This is a part-time position, paid at an hourly rate, competitive, and commensurate with experience.
