THIS IS A COMPETITIVE CIVIL SERVICE POSITION. APPOINTMENT WILL BE MADE ON A PROVISIONAL BASIS UNTIL THE EXAM RESULTS ARE POSTED. YOU MUST BE REACHABLE FOR PERMANENT APPOINTMENT.

The City of Syracuse, Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Services is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Trails Coordinator.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for assisting in the management of the City of Syracuse Creek Walk, Empire Trail and other local trails that run within City limits. The position will have a wide range of responsibilities focused on maintaining, improving and enhancing the Creek Walk, Empire Trail and other trails. The work entails coordination and collaboration with Parks Grounds staff and other City departmental personnel. Supervision is not typically a function of this class . Work is carried out under the administrative supervision of the Commissioner of Parks and Recreation. Does related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of trail policies, rules and regulations.

Good knowledge of horticulture and native species on trails.

Good knowledge of inventory, assessment and analysis of trail conditions, needs and uses.

Good knowledge of organizational, time management, project management, budgeting and communication skills.

Working knowledge of GPS and GIS.

Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools, simple machinery and light motor equipment.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.

Ability to set priorities for trails operation and maintenance.

Ability to oversee and manage contractor-led trail projects.

Ability to develop the trails operating budget.

Ability to plan, schedule, assign and oversee the work of subordinate employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to read and understand construction documents.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively on multiple projects with a variety of partners.

Ability to coordinate with partner organizations, and volunteers on a variety of initiatives.

Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.

Ability to work in rough terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Open Competitive:

Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, forestry, outdoor recreation, environmental science, geography, GIS, landscape architecture or a closely related field; or,

Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's degree and two (2) years of experience, or its part-time equivalent, in advocacy, planning, development, design or construction of natural surface recreational trails; or,

Four (4) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in advocacy, planning, development, design or construction of natural surface recreational trails.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT: When required to operate motor vehicles, possession of a valid New York State driver's license appropriate to the type of vehicle being operated. Licensure must be maintained throughout the course of employment.

Pay: $57,477.00 - $67,707.00 per year
