Overview
Dispatches trains to ensure the safe and efficient use of personnel and equipment within assigned railroad territory.
Responsibilities

Prepare and transmit Dispatcher’s Bulletins and messages via computer and fax machine,
-
Prepare train sheets and daily reports for summary of train operations. Update AS400 with train operation information, delay and accident reports for inclusion in Morning Report.

Enter train operations information in AS400 for update of transportation system events for train performance.

In cases of incidents, Train Dispatcher must follow protocol and instructions regarding notification of specific government agencies, FEC management and state and local officials.

Train Dispatcher must be aware and follow rules and regulations regarding train movement on specific commodities and clearance requirements of cars moving in trains and in passing trains.

Train Dispatcher must follow radio procedures and protocol.

Train Dispatcher is required to ride at least two through-freight trains per year, at the discretion of the Carrier.

Train Dispatcher is also required to perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma/GED
-
21 years of age or older
-
Valid Driver's License
-
Five years of train dispatching experience
-
Experience with specialized computer dispatching equipment
Preferred Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, especially in transportation or logistics

10 years of train dispatching experience
Knowledge And Skills
-
Computer Aided Dispatching Software
-
Comprehensive knowledge of train operations and operating rules
-
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint)

Demonstrated experience and ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and written

Prioritize and manage multiple issues and priorities throughout the shift
-
Ability to work with minimal supervision, manage time effectively and maintain control over multiple projects and responsibilities; follow up on all relevant issues

Ability to reason, compare, understand, and think rationally on the job
Working Conditions

Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime and various shift work
-
The successful candidate will be required to be available for duty as needed (non-guaranteed extra board)

Available to report to work with two-hour advance notice

Occasional travel requirements, which may include overnight stays away from home

Work sitting for long periods of time

Meals eaten while working; infrequent breaks
-
Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity and ability to recognize colors
Employment Conditions

Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries

Complete annual training and pass safety and operating rules examinations
-
Complete train rides quarterly for familiarization with assigned territory

Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
-
Must pass all required assessments

Must pass a background screening
-
May require a post offer medical examination, including drug test and physical capabilities test
-
Work tracking train and on-track equipment movements on multiple platforms in fast-paced environment

Requires frequent revision in work assignments
-
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement; membership is required

Active employees must complete one year in current position or craft before applying for positions
