Summary

Under general supervision of the Transit Manager, incumbent will perform a variety of tasks related to the operation of Ak-Chin Tribal Transit focused around the scheduling of public transportation, paratransit and demand response. Incumbent is responsible for performing the functions associated with routing and dispatching which includes; operating a variety of communication equipment, including two-way radio, telephone, computer, scheduling systems; creates, maintains and monitors computerized driver manifests/schedules; and responds to requests for service and provides a variety of information to passengers and the general public

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required and a minimum of one (1) year experience in Transit scheduling, routing and dispatching; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience to perform the job duties and responsibilities as described. Must possess a valid Arizona Driver’s license and be able to meet the Community’s insurance carrier requirements. Must complete and pass a background check.

Examples of Duties

  • Creates, maintains and monitors computerized daily manifests/schedules for dispatching and routing transit services. Modify and update schedules to improve services ensuring the accuracy of statistical information.
  • Provides public transportation and paratransit dispatching and routing services to the Ak-Chin Community and general public; dispatch Demand response and paratransit vehicles as appropriate.
  • Uses judgment to resolve unusual situations or situations that occur in the field such as, errors in pick-up or drop off locations, changes, additions and modification in services, and change out of broken equipment to ensure service delivery.
  • Operates a multi-line telephone to respond to calls from customers for the purpose of scheduling transportation and providing information.
  • Monitors computer and two-way radio for information regarding scheduling issues and field situations; notify field supervisor of situations requiring attention.
  • Tracks, edits, and reconciles Transit Driver manifests to ensure accuracy of miles and number of customers transported.
  • Maintains routing sheets in accordance with the Transit Department’s standard operating procedures.
  • Monitors and updates records and statistics on vehicle maintenance and processes receipts for fuel and operations.
  • Provides a variety of public transportation information to passengers, the general public and other public agencies; provide quality customer service and respond to public inquiries and requests for service in a courteous manner.
  • Adapts to changing technologies and learn functionality of new equipment and systems.
  • Responds to any emergency by assisting in the coordination of transportation for emergency personnel, resources, equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Transports passengers only when needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Other Requirements

  • Knowledge of a variety of general office equipment and its usage.
  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures, including file maintenance and record keeping practices and procedures.
  • Methods and techniques of dispatching commercial passenger vehicles.
  • Dispatching techniques with the use of two-way radio systems for communicating and receiving information. Streets, landmarks, and geography of Ak-Chin Indian Community and the City of Maricopa.
  • Knowledge of the operation of a variety of word processing and spreadsheet computer software.
  • Knowledge of customer service/public relations practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of formats used for preparation of written documents.
  • Knowledge of telephone etiquette.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to remain calm and work effectively with a heavy workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Community Council and members, Federal and State agency personnel, upper management, coworkers and the general public.
  • Skill in using customer service/public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints.
  • Skill in maintaining and updating files, records, policies and procedures.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Skill in typing and editing a variety of records, reports, and correspondence using appropriate format and word processing software.
  • Skill in following complex oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in operating a variety of office equipment, including a personal computer with word processing and other appropriate software, telephone, photocopier, and FAX machine.
