Position Overview
The Driver is responsible for driving either a roll-off truck or tractor trailer to transport and deliver material to supplier, customer, storage, or processing locations while ensuring that all of his/her efforts are compliant with the company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards and all applicable DOT regulations. This position has no supervisory responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Use a roll-off truck and/or trailer with tractor to load, unload, pick-up and drop off materials and/or empty containers to customer sites
- Visually inspect materials that are loaded to ensure that containers are safe to haul per Pennsylvania DOT requirements
- Maintain a well-manicured appearance and provide excellent customer service while representing the company
- Maintain a safe driving record at all times while employed
- Analyze Customer's needs when placing/pick-up roll-off containers
- Assure that materials meet the Sullivan’s non-ferrous and ferrous quality specifications as directed by Management
- Perform and record a daily pre-trip inspection of equipment assigned truck and trailer equipment and report any mechanical and/or safety issues or concerns to Management.
- Report weight deductions from commercial accounts to the Office
- Ensure accuracy of record keeping for interoffice documentation
- Other duties, as assigned
- Move freight and materials to and from production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, ships, and containers by hand or using trucks, tractors, and other equipment
- Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew, checking that vehicle and loading equipment are properly positioned
- Secure material for transport using ropes, blocks, chains, or covers
- Receive instructions from dispatch and proceed to location for delivery or receipt of material
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order
- Maintain all logs of working hours, vehicle service, and repair status, adhering to state and federal regulations
- Obtain receipts or signatures for delivered materials and check all documentation to ensure it is complete and accurate
- Provide backup or assistance throughout the yard as needed or assigned
- Carry needed tools and supplies from storage or trucks, and return them after use
- Report all vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damages to the appropriate supervisor
Qualifications
- Valid PA Class A Driver’s License
- CDL A Driver's License preferred
- Driving for at least 2 years required
- Excellent knowledge of traffic laws and regulations
- ·Strong communication skills to interact with clients and team members
- Thorough understanding of DOT rules and regulations and vehicle operations
- Ability to write simple reports and correspondence such as pre-trip and post-trip inspections, accident reports, daily paperwork, etc.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple correspondence and instructions such as daily schedules, company policies and procedures, etc.
- Must work well with team members or independently; gives and receives feedback in a constructive manner
- Makes timely and sound decisions; uses resources wisely
- Physical stamina to handle loading and unloading materials
- Ability to work independently and follow instructions accurately
