Trucking Dispatcher (Ready-Mix)

READY-MIX TRUCKING DISPATCHER

The Trucking Dispatcher coordinates the daily dispatch of ready-mix concrete trucks, dump trucks, and materials semis to construction job sites, quarries, and concrete plants. This role ensures efficient routing, on-time deliveries, and safe operations while adapting to changing wather, seasonal demand, and job site conditions. The Dispatcher serves as the primary communication link between drivers, plant operations, and project managers in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment.

Essential Functions

• Schedule and dispatch trucks to meet delivery times and material needs
• Coordinate rented trucks
• Coordinate cement deliveries
• Coordinate closely with batch plant operators to align production output with delivery schedules
• Communicate clearly with drivers via radio, phone, or dispatch software throughout the day
• Monitor deliveries and proactively adjust schedules due to traffic, job site delays, or changing weather conditions (heat, rain, or freezing temps)
• Manage high-volume dispatching during peak construction season
• Track truck locations, turnaround times, and driver availability to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime
• Provide excellent teamwork by communicating ETAs, delays, and schedule changes to operations and project managers
• Maintain accurate delivery tickets, dispatch logs, and reporting on paper and in dispatch software
• Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, hours-of-service guidelines, and company safety policies
• Coordinate with the mechanic team for maintenance or substitution of trucks as needed to avoid service disruptions

Working Conditions:

• High-paced, deadline-driven environment with constant phone/radio communication
• Work hours typically begin early morning
• Seasonal workload:
• • Peak demand in spring, summer, and fall with extended hours and potential overtime
  • Reduced but variable hours during winter months depending on weather and production
• Exposure to construction-related environments and conditions

Required Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• 2+ years of dispatching, logistics, or transportation experience preferred (ready-mix or construction industry strongly preferred)
• Familiarity with Iowa road systems, local geography, and rural vs. urban delivery challenges
• Experience with dispatching systems and basic computer proficiency
• Strong organizational, multitasking, and decision-making skills
• Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure, fast-changing situations
• Excellent verbal communication and teamwork skills
• Understanding of DOT regulations and transportation safety practices preferred
• Valid Driver License required
• Commercial Driver License (CDL A or CDL B) preferred
• Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time, walk on uneven surfaces unassisted, hear, talk, and see

Schedule:

• Generally 40-60 hours per week
• Monday to Friday, occasional half day Saturday
• All hours are weather permitting

• Report to Iowa City office, multiple jobsite and concrete plant locations
