Description
PURPOSE:
The Daytona Beach Fire Department is currently seeking to establish an eligibility list for the position of Firefighter/EMT and Firefighter/Paramedic. The City of Daytona Beach is a NON-TRANSPORT ALS department that operates 24/48s.
Under general supervision, the Firefighter has responsibility for extinguishing fires, rescuing persons and property from danger, and performing salvage and related follow-up work. Incumbents are required to perform life-saving rescue techniques as part of fire rescue operations or as part as of other emergency operations. While emergency responses constitute the primary focus of a firefighter's responsibility, additional time is spent in study, training, inspecting, and maintaining equipment and apparatus, and in cleaning and maintaining quarters. Duties involve an element of personal danger and incumbents must be capable of functioning as an integral part of a work unit to ensure the safe and efficient performance of duties.
Drug Screening: This position requires a drug screen.
Starting Salary $61,694.37*
(*Base Annualized Salary $50,158.83, Paramedic Incentive $10,192.00, Half-time $1,343.54)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

SPECIAL INCENTIVE PAY: Fire Officer, Fire Inspector, Relief Driver, SCBA Repair, Tech Rescue, Vessel Operator, Drone
DEGREE INCENTIVE: Associate’s ($600 year) or Bachelor’s ($1,300)
PERSONAL LEAVE ACCRUAL: 268.8 Hours per year
HOLIDAY LEAVE: 123.2 Hours (Holidays, Birthday, Employee Appreciation)
POLICE & FIRE PENSION: 20 years @ 3%, 10-year vesting
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE PLAN: $1,000.00 annually
EMPLOYEE HEALTH CARE PLAN: Choice from three plans: HMO, PPO, or Health Savings Account
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Responds to emergencies with a fire company or rescue unit and answers medical emergencies as part of an Advanced Life Support (ALS) engine company or a rescue unit.
Removes, extracts, and rescues persons from danger, recognizes acute symptoms requiring immediate care and administers life-saving rescue procedures to injured or afflicted persons (i.e. immobilization, assessing vitals, controlling bleeding, acquiring medical history).
Performs salvage operations, including throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, removing debris, and placing smoke ejectors.
Connects hose to hydrants and pumps, joins hose sections and connects nozzles to hose, connects to standpipes and sprinkler systems where applicable, enters burning buildings with or without hose lines, operates nozzles and sprays, water foam, and/or other specialized control agents, as applicable.
Operates hand fire extinguishers and similar equipment in extinguishing fires, raises and climbs ladders, works from aerial apparatus where applicable, ventilates burning buildings to remove smoke and gases.
Makes daily inspections of apparatus and equipment and notifies supervisor of defects, performs cleaning and maintenance tasks in and about assigned station.
Aids in the mitigation of other emergencies as directed by supervisor.
Attends instruction sessions in firefighting methods, equipment operation, rescue procedures, hazardous materials, mitigation, and related subjects.
Incident reporting.
May be required to work out of classification as a Driver Engineer as directed.

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert extremely heavy physical effort in very heavy work typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials more than 100 pounds.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Environmental Factors: Tasks risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as smoke, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease and/or pathogenic substances.
PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
The work performance of non-supervisory personnel of the City of Daytona Beach is routinely evaluated according to the performance criteria outlined herein:
Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods procedures and policies of the City of Daytona as such pertain to the performance of the essential duties of a Firefighter. Has thorough knowledge of principles and practices of saving and protecting lives and property through fire prevention activities, rendering emergency medical treatment and mitigating other emergencies such as hazardous materials incidents and natural disasters. Includes thorough knowledge of the methods materials equipment and techniques used in performing essential functions. Has thorough knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Has considerable knowledge of the organization of the department and of related departments and agencies. Clearly understands the occupational hazards and safety precautions required to perform the essential functions of the work. Has thorough knowledge of terminology and related professional languages used within the department as such pertain to work responsibilities. Knows how to maintain cooperative and effective relationships with intra- and interdepartmental personnel as well as any external entities with which position interacts.
Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interaction with internal and external entities with whom the position interacts.
