Job Overview:

Operates and maintains utilities equipment such as industrial water tube boilers, deaerator tanks, rotary screw compressors, centrifugal compressors, pumps, diesel engines, electric motors, cooling towers, and evaporative condensers to ensure safe and reliable delivery of high-pressure steam, anhydrous ammonia, process water, fire water, instrument air, and nitrogen to clients on the site. Performs additional maintenance tasks as needed. Works on a team as “inside” and “outside” operators. Interacts with maintenance workers, contract employees, technical and professional employees, and department supervisors.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Ensures the safe and efficient operation and basic maintenance of all utility plant equipment.
  • Maintains organization and cleanliness of utilities equipment and work areas. Completes projects to improve the performance and appearance of utilities equipment.
  • Monitors operations of the utilities systems, logs data, makes process adjustments as required, and submits maintenance work orders.
  • Stays current with knowledge and proficiency regarding process control systems including screen manipulation and response.
  • Tests and regulates water treatment chemical levels and maintains chemical feeding pumps, controls, and piping system.
  • Performs lockout/tagout (de-energization) of equipment and issues safe work permits to ensure safe performance of maintenance on equipment.
  • Assists the manager in developing short and long-term strategies for training requirements, standard operating procedures, preventative maintenance programs, benchmarking activities, etc.
  • Conducts safety, housekeeping, regulatory, and environmental inspections. Documents activities and maintains preventative maintenance programs. Occasionally performs limited hazardous waste management tasks such as waste movement, labeling, and manifesting.
  • Participates in safety audits, process safety management, ISO 9001, RC 14001, and site safety process activities while meeting or exceeding these and other regulatory requirements, including OSHA and SCDHEC.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Specific Skills:

  • Possesses a general mechanical background.
  • Exhibits proven basic math and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic understanding of electrical circuits.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent is required; Associate degree and/or Certificate in Industrial Work Skills such as industrial maintenance, automated technology, welding, etc. is preferred.

Minimum Experience:

2 years of experience with industrial or commercial maintenance operations is required; 5 years of high-pressure industrial boiler operations is preferred.

Valid driver’s license

Physical Requirements:

Possess close visual acuity and acuity to operate machinery, motor vehicles, and heavy equipment, ability to reach, stand, walk, grasp, feel, talk, hear, repetitive motion, crouch, stoop, lift, push, pull, and exert up to 75lbs of force occasionally, 25lbs frequently, and 10lbs constantly.

Working Conditions:

Subject to activities inside and outside, temperature levels below 32 degrees and above 100 degrees for more than one hour, noise levels where one may need to shout to be heard, vibration, hazards such as moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in high places, working in close quarters and narrow aisles, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, and other cutting fluids.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $24.00-$39.00

Supplemental Pay: 5% Annual Bonus

Shift Schedule: Rotating 12-hour shift of 6:00am to 6:00pm and 6:00pm to 6:00am, with 36 hours worked in week one and 48 hours in week two.
