Position Summary:

The Utility Worker – Boiler & Utility Systems Specialist is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all plant utility systems, including boilers, steam traps, air compressors, scrubbers, steam management systems, make-up water systems, cooling towers, air distribution systems, and reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment systems. This position plays a critical role in ensuring uninterrupted utility support to production operations while maintaining the highest standards of safety, reliability, and environmental compliance.

1. Boiler Operation and Maintenance

  • Perform daily inspections, testing, and operation of high-pressure and low-pressure boilers.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance such as cleaning, burner tune-ups, pressure vessel inspections, and safety valve testing.
  • Monitor boiler efficiency, water chemistry, and combustion performance.
  • Identify and correct system leaks, faulty controls, or mechanical defects.
  • Maintain accurate records and logs in compliance with L&I and environmental requirements.

2. Steam Systems and Steam Traps

  • Inspect, test, and replace malfunctioning steam traps, valves, and regulators.
  • Conduct regular steam audits to identify inefficiencies and reduce energy losses.
  • Maintain insulation and verify all pressure and temperature control devices.
  • Implement a preventative maintenance schedule for all steam-related components.

3. Air Compressors and Air Systems

  • Operate and maintain air compressor units (rotary screw, reciprocating, or centrifugal).
  • Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, filter replacements, belt adjustments, and leak checks.
  • Inspect receiver tanks, piping, and safety relief valves for integrity and compliance.
  • Ensure consistent delivery of clean, dry air through dryer and filtration system maintenance.

4. Scrubbers and Emissions Control Systems

  • Monitor and maintain scrubber systems used for sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and other process gas cleaning.
  • Conduct inspections and preventative maintenance on pumps, fans, spray nozzles, demisters, and chemical feed systems.
  • Ensure proper operation of pH control systems and maintain chemical inventory for scrubber operation.
  • Maintain records of emissions system performance, inspections, and maintenance activities for regulatory compliance.
  • Support environmental and process safety audits as related to scrubber performance and emissions management.

5. Water Systems and Cooling Towers

  • Conduct preventative maintenance on make-up water systems and cooling towers, including cleaning, water treatment, and monitoring for biological growth, corrosion, or scaling.
  • Maintain pumps, fans, strainers, and basin levels to ensure continuous performance.
  • Monitor conductivity, temperature, and chemical balance to meet system specifications.
  • Identify and correct leaks, scaling, or operational deficiencies.

6. Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems

  • Operate and maintain RO units by monitoring flow rates, pressures, and water quality.
  • Replace filters and membranes as required, following manufacturer and facility procedures.
  • Conduct chemical cleanings, sanitization, and flushing to extend membrane life.
  • Ensure product water meets all quality parameters for plant use.

7. Steam and Utility Management

  • Support overall plant utility management to optimize efficiency and minimize waste.
  • Assist in balancing and control adjustments for steam and air systems.
  • Participate in utility system startups, shutdowns, and commissioning activities.

Preventative Maintenance:

Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on all boilers, scrubbers, air compressors, cooling towers, RO systems, and related utilities per the facility’s CMMS program. Maintain detailed documentation of all work, inspections, and parts usage. Identify trends and suggest improvements to increase reliability and reduce downtime. Support root cause analysis (RCA) activities for recurring system issues.

Safety and Compliance:

Maintain an unwavering commitment to safety — Safety is the highest priority. Follow all L&I, environmental, and facility-specific safety procedures. Actively participate in safety meetings, hazard assessments, and training programs. Ensure compliance with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and hot work procedures. Follow all safety protocols related to sulfur handling, H₂S exposure, and corrosive chemicals. Report unsafe conditions, near misses, or incidents immediately to supervision.

Additional Duties:

Assist with shutdowns, turnarounds, and capital projects involving utility systems. Support installation, calibration, and testing of new equipment and instrumentation. Maintain housekeeping standards in all mechanical and utility areas. Provide mentorship and training for junior maintenance or operations staff. Be available for call-outs and respond to emergency utility system issues 24/7 as needed.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED required; Technical Certificate or Associate Degree preferred. Minimum 3–5 years of experience in industrial utilities, boilers, or process plant maintenance (chemical, sulfur, or refinery experience preferred). Valid Boiler Operator License or L&I Boiler Certification preferred. Strong troubleshooting and mechanical aptitude. Familiarity with CMMS systems and predictive maintenance tools (vibration, infrared, ultrasound). Ability to interpret P&IDs, blueprints, and technical manuals.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements:

Ability to work in hot, humid, noisy, and confined environments. Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing ladders, and standing for extended periods. Required to wear PPE including respirators, FR clothing, gloves, hearing and eye protection. Work includes exposure to sulfur compounds, steam, and high-pressure systems.

Job Type: Full-time

Base Pay: $24.12 - $29.05 per hour

Expected hours: 40 – 60 per week
