The Vendor Development Engineer (VDE) is responsible for identifying, developing, and managing suppliers for CNC-machined components. The role ensures quality, cost competitiveness, timely delivery, and continuous supplier improvement as per company standards.
Key Responsibilities1. Vendor Sourcing & Development
- Identify and onboard new suppliers for CNC-machined components (Turning, Milling, VMC, HMC, Grinding).
- Conduct supplier capability audits (machine capability, process capability, manpower, quality systems).
- Evaluate vendor manufacturing processes, capacity, and technical expertise.
2. Costing & Negotiation
- Review engineering drawings, BOM, and machining process flow.
- Estimate machining cycle time, material cost, machining cost, tooling cost.
- Negotiate pricing, payment terms, and cost reduction initiatives with vendors.
3. Supplier Quality Management
- Work with QA/QC teams to ensure PPAP, APQP, control plans, and inspection standards.
- Monitor supplier rejection PPM and take corrective & preventive actions (CAPA).
- Ensure adherence to ISO/TS quality systems.
4. Process & Technical Support
- Guide suppliers on machining parameters, fixturing, tooling selection, and process improvement.
- Validate CNC programs and machining methods where required.
- Ensure vendors follow SPC, 5S, and lean manufacturing systems.
5. Delivery & Performance Monitoring
- Track supplier delivery schedules, lead times, and OTIF performance.
- Coordinate with planning, logistics, and production to meet monthly requirements.
- Implement continuous improvement projects at vendor end.
6. Documentation & Compliance
- Prepare supplier evaluation reports, vendor scorecards, and audit findings.
- Maintain vendor master data, contracts, and documentation as per SOP.
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and legal requirements.
Key Skills Required
- Strong knowledge of CNC machining (Turning, Milling, VMC, HMC).
- Ability to read & interpret mechanical drawings (GD&T, tolerances, symbols).
- Experience in supplier audits and development.
- Costing & negotiation skills.
- Knowledge of machining process, cycle time calculation, cutting tools & fixturing.
- Familiarity with PPAP, APQP, SPC, 7QC tools.
- Good communication and coordination skills.
Qualification
- BE / B.Tech Mechanical / Production Engineering
- Diploma holders with strong experience may also apply
Preferred Experience
- 3–8 years in Machine Shop Vendor Development / Supplier Quality / CNC Production
- Experience in automotive or precision machining industry
