An operations job for candidates with experience in Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro/Ro) and bulk carriers involves managing the complex logistics of vessel movements, cargo handling, and regulatory compliance to ensure safe and cost-effective voyages. The role requires specialized knowledge for each vessel type. Core Responsibilities
- Vessel Operations Management: Monitor daily vessel movements, coordinate schedules, and ensure timely port turnarounds. This includes communicating with ship masters, port agents, charterers, and other stakeholders.
- Cargo Handling & Management: Oversee all aspects of cargo operations, including loading, stowing, securing, and discharging for both Ro/Ro (vehicles/rolling cargo via ramps) and bulk carriers (dry goods like grain, coal, ore).
- Safety and Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to international maritime regulations (e.g., IMO, SOLAS), safety protocols, and company procedures. This includes managing dangerous goods documentation and high-risk area transits.
- Voyage Planning and Optimization: Prepare and issue voyage instructions, optimize fuel consumption (bunker planning), and plan efficient routes to minimize costs and time.
- Documentation and Administration: Manage all required documentation, including Bills of Lading, cargo manifests, and customs declarations. Maintain accurate records and prepare reports for management review.
- Financial Management & Claims: Monitor operational budgets, approve invoices, calculate laytime, and manage claims related to cargo damage, demurrage, or insurance in coordination with legal/insurance teams.
- Problem-Solving: Act as the primary point of contact for operational issues, incidents, and emergencies, providing timely and effective solutions.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of shore-based experience as a vessel operator in the dry bulk sector or relevant sea-going experience (e.g., Chief Officer on bulk/Ro/Ro vessels).
- Sound knowledge of chartering operations and a strong understanding of the unique operational challenges of Ro/Ro and bulk carriers.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in vessel management systems (e.g., Softmar, IMOS) and MS Office Suite.
- Familiarity with cargo handling equipment and safety systems specific to both vessel types.
- Soft Skills:
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical, planning, and problem-solving abilities.
- High level of attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
