Summary
We are seeking a Veterinary Technician to join our team at West Valley Humane Society. In this role, you will play a vital part in the health and well-being of the animals in our care. Your expertise will help ensure that we provide high-quality veterinary services while supporting our mission of animal welfare.
Purpose of Position
- To carry out the direction of the Clinic Manager and veterinarian(s) in providing routine medical care and treatment to animals.
- To be responsible for animal caretaking and to maintain a clean and disease-free clinic area and kennels.
- To organize, pass, and track medications for all the animals during their stay in our facility.
Duties and responsibilities
Clinic duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Follow WVHS protocols including hold/intake times, vaccinations, and cleaning procedures.
- Maintain a clean, healthy, and disease-free environment in the clinic area and kennels.
- Keep the Veterinarian and Clinic Manager informed regarding animal health status, post-surgery recovery, or concerns following treatment.
- Administer vaccines, medications (including oral, topical, and injectable), de-wormer, and treatments as directed.
- Perform animal care tasks such as bathing, grooming, flea/tick removal, FeLV/FIV testing, skin scrapes, and other basic diagnostic procedures.
- Track, organize, and distribute prescribed medications and provide special diets as needed.
- Assist the veterinarian with basic procedures and surgeries.
- Monitor the health of animals daily and report medical or behavioral concerns promptly.
- Complete and update animal health records in both hard copy and shelter database formats.
- Maintain a well-organized and stocked medication cart and medical supply inventory.
- Assist with scheduling veterinary appointments and transporting animals to and from offsite clinics.
- Support intake procedures including safe animal restraint, vaccinations, and triage evaluations.
- Walk dogs and provide enrichment or comfort as needed.
- Promote a humane, caring, and respectful approach toward animals.
- Provide guidance and technical support to part-time staff and volunteers, including training in medical and intake procedures.
- Work courteously and collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and the public.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Be able to learn and perform assigned tasks readily and accurately.
- Demonstrate professionalism and tact in interactions with the public and team members.
- Have the ability to handle and care for dogs, cats, and other animals safely and humanely.
- Acquire and apply knowledge of animal breeds, behaviors, and proper handling techniques.
- Understand and comply with state, county, and city regulations regarding animal care and welfare.
- Possess a strong working knowledge of shelter protocols, including adoption, surrender, and euthanasia policies.
- Meet appearance and behavior standards for public-facing work.
- Effectively multitask in a fast-paced, sometimes high-stress environment.
- Have basic computer skills and familiarity with Word, Excel, and shelter software (e.g., PetPoint, ShelterLuv).
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Possess a valid Idaho driver’s license (preferred).
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Experience in Animal handling is required; one year of experience as a veterinary or medical technician is preferred.
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
Knowledge of animal care techniques, relevant state and local laws, basic medical protocols, and common animal pharmaceuticals. Strong teamwork skills, ability to handle emergencies and stressful situations, perform basic medical treatments, and engage effectively with the public. Foster positive relationships with staff, volunteers, and other animal organizations.
Availability:
WVHS is open to the public 7 days a week and all but 8 additional holidays a year. Availability and a willingness to work a flexible schedule are required. Vet/Med Techs may be required to work any day of the week and any hours from 07:30am-06:30pm in shifts of up to 8-10 hours. Please list all schedule limitations you may have when considering these work hours. (Limitations may include school times, daycare times, days of the week that cannot be worked, vacations or other appointments planned in the next 90 days.)

- High school or equivalent (Required)

Experience:
- Medical Technician Experience: 1 year (Preferred)
- Animal Handling: 1 year (Required)
License/Certification:
- Driver's License (Preferred)
- CET Certification (Preferred/may obtain once hired)
