Distinguishing Features of Work

The Victim/Witness Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting victims of crime and assisting with the coordination of witnesses for the successful prosecution of cases pending in Municipal Court. Working under the general supervision of the Chief Deputy City Attorney, the Coordinator serves as a key liaison between victims, witnesses, prosecutors and court personnel. The role demands empathy, professionalism, and strong communication and administrative skills. By ensuring victims and witnesses are informed, supported, and connected to essential services, this position directly enhances public trust in the City of Wichita’s justice system and contributes to a safer community.


The day and hours for this position:
Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm

Examples of Work Performed

  • Personally interviews or contacts victims by telephone.
  • Accompanies victims during court proceedings.
  • Provides information and referrals to community resources and assists with applications and requirements for victim compensation if needed.
  • Assists victims in obtaining emergency transportation enabling them to participate in the criminal justice system.
  • Assists victims in understanding their role in the criminal justice system.
  • Identifies and tracks all required case related victim/witness information.
  • Ensures all notification letters are generated and distributed within specified time periods.
  • Receives, compiles and documents restitution due and owing in all applicable cases.
  • May use electronic spreadsheets for tracking case information.
  • Compose letters providing information or requesting information.

Requirements of Work

  • Considerable knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques.
  • Ability to understand and maintain the confidentiality requirements of criminal investigation records.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate and professional boundaries in workplace, in particular in interactions with victims.
  • Considerable knowledge of social services agencies in the community.
  • Ability to gather facts and organize them into verbal and written reports.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with prosecutors, attorneys, court staff and the public.
  • Ability to remain sensitive to and supportive of victims.
  • Knowledge of standard computer keyboard configuration and ability to access, interpret, and record information through use of a video display terminal and electronic keyboard.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use English language usage reference materials.
  • May require knowledge of, and ability to engage in, use of computer keyboard and video display monitor in electronic spreadsheet development, using basic mathematical and descriptive statistical operations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to compose routine letters.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop charts and graphs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Knowledge of the criminal and civil court systems.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Experience and Training

Required Experience and Training

  • Completion of 60 college credit hours in human services, behavioral science, criminal justice, psychology, sociology, or social work. OR Two years’ experience working within a criminal justice or victim services environment, experience including direct interaction with victims or witnesses, providing information or support throughout legal or investigative processes, assisting with documentation or case preparation, and coordinating with justice system professionals to ensure victim participation and access to resources.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
  • Attainment of passing scores on pre-employment tests. Candidates with the required experience and training will be required to take the following assessments:
  • Microsoft Excel 2013 – Normal User
  • Office Telephone Etiquette
  • Office Grammar and Spelling

Preferred Experience and Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, human services, psychology, sociology, or social work.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
