RENO-SPARKS INDIAN COLONY: WHO WE ARE

The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony represents descendants of three Great Basin Indigenous peoples: the **Numu (Northern Paiute)**, **Newe (Western Shoshone)**, and **Washeshu (Washoe)**. These communities lived in harmony with the land for generations before European contact, following seasonal cycles and forming small, efficient social groups for survival. Each group’s name means **“The People”** in their own language, reflecting their deep cultural identity and connection to the Earth. They maintained strong traditions, respected neighboring tribes, and engaged in trade throughout the region. WHAT DOES A VICTIM SERVICES COORDINATOR DO?

The Victim Services Coordinator (VSC) at the Reno Sparks Indian Colony will serve as the essential point of contact for victims of crime, providing much-needed support and resources to those in distress. In this pivotal role, the VSC will offer direct assistance and impactful referrals to crime victims and their families, addressing the emotional challenges that arise from victimization. You will be responsible for delivering compassionate emotional support and a wide range of resources, helping individuals navigate the complexities of their situations.

Additionally, the VSC will play a crucial role in raising awareness and educating the community about available services for crime victims, ensuring they feel empowered and informed as they seek to rebuild their lives.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR IN A VICTIM SERVICES COORDINATOR

To excel as a Victim Services Coordinator at the Reno Sparks Indian Colony, candidates must possess a diverse skill set that aligns with the needs of crime victims and their families. A solid understanding of accepted counseling principles and practices, along with experience in social services, is crucial for providing effective support. Proficiency in various software programs, such as MS Word and Excel, will aid in maintaining accurate records and data management. Strong communication skills—both verbal and written—are essential for advocating on behalf of victims and navigating the complexities of the criminal justice system.

Additionally, candidates should demonstrate organizational abilities to coordinate program functions, training, and community outreach. Experience in supervisory roles is valuable for staff development and program evaluation. Knowledge of local resources and a clear understanding of the RSIC community will help foster meaningful connections, ensuring victims receive the support they need on their path to recovery.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

• Provide direct assistance to crime victims, their families and friends and the community via telephone and in-person contacts and appear for court; provide direction to or accompany victims to court as necessary.
• Provide information and referral services to victims/loved ones regarding other, agencies, counselors, legal services, medical services, support groups and shelters.
• Responsible for maintaining up-to-date resources
• Provide follow-up and ongoing contact with clients
• Assist with filing for Crime Victims Compensation, writing Victim Impact Statements.
• Coordinate and facilitate participation in approved peer support groups for Victims
• Maintain accurate records on all client contacts. Complete required statistical, data and information.
• Advocate on behalf of victims and survivors within the criminal justice system
• Act as a liaison between victim/family and the prosecutors, Crime Victims
• Compensation to include courtroom advocacy for pre-trial, sentencing, post sentencing and appeals.
• Collaborate with stakeholders in the criminal justice system and social human, services agencies to include all County, State, Tribal and Federal partners.
• Attend and/or facilitate community meetings regarding victim issues
• Provide or facilitate training to community members and RSIC Departments as needed
• Represent Human Services Victim Services at community and other events
• speaking on behalf of the RSIC to increase awareness of victimization and services
• Promote awareness of services for crime victims.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Associates Degree in Human Services, Psychology, Criminal or related field and three (3) years' experience or five (5) years' experience that provides broad knowledge of victim services/ issues social service agencies and community resources referral entities.
• Accepted counseling principles and practices.
• At least two (2) years supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of the goals of Tribal Court and related services under the Family Violence Ordinance
• Knowledge of rules and regulations governing victim services and programs: functions of the criminal justice system.
• Social Services; principles of providing assistance to victim's/advocacy services: program development, monitoring and evaluation; interviewing and record keeping techniques.
• Principles of supervision, training and staff development.
• Principles of finance and budgeting.
• Ability to organize and direct the functions of the Victims Services Program.
• Properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with laws, regulations and policies.
• Principles of Human Behavior and basic crisis intervention.
• Develop community referral and resources for Crime Victims; evaluate training need and analyze program effectiveness.
• Determine appropriate action in emergencies; prioritize coordinate work through others.
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the RSIC Community its organization and needs.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Possession of a valid Nevada Driver's license without limitations, sanctions and able to provide a clean DMV report for insurance purposes.
• Must be proficient in operating various computer-based programs (i.e., MS Word, Excel, etc.).
