    Position Overview
    The Bellefonte Area School District is seeking a Vision Support Paraeducator to provide one-on-one support to students who are blind or visually impaired to help them reach their highest potential in the least invasive way possible. The primary goal is to promote student independence and avoid "learned helplessness" by providing just the right amount of support while remaining as "invisible" as possible to facilitate interaction between the student and their peers or teachers.
    Key Responsibilities
    The Vision Support Paraeducator will:
    • Respect the role of teacher(s) as supervisor.
    • Provide Instructional Support: Reinforce content and skills taught by the classroom teacher, Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI), or Orientation and Mobility (O&M) instructor.
    • Provide Literacy Support (Braille): Assist students learning Braille when the TVI is not present, ensure students have necessary Braille volumes for class, and help students follow along during instruction.
    • Collect materials from regular education teachers for embossing or accessibility and review them with the TVI.
    • Serve as a liaison and reporter for the educational team, relaying information to the TVI.
    • Participate in team meetings for the student
    • Use specialized equipment to perform basic transcription and produce tactile materials
    • Reinforce O&M expectations across all environments
    • Maintain anecdotal notes and daily data sheets
    Education Requirements
    Minimum: Associates or Bachelor's Degree, 48 college credits, or Para HQ certificate
    Preferred: Bachelor's Degree
    Experience Requirements
    Minimum:
    • Six months experience working with students
    Preferred:
    • Previous role working with students in public education
    Certifications & Licenses
    Required:
    • Completion of Highly Qualified Paraprofessional Training and Exam

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, talk, and hear. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee will need the ability to lift up to 40 lbs. Ability to stand or walk fifty percent (50%) of the workday. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and peripheral vision. Ability to hear with 40 decibel loss maximum and see with acuity of 20 inches or less, and far acuity of at least 20 feet normal depth perception, field of vision and accommodation.
