Position Overview:
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Volunteer Attorney to join our team and provide pro bono legal support to advance our mission. This role is ideal for a licensed attorney seeking meaningful community engagement while leveraging their legal expertise to strengthen nonprofit operations and support underserved populations. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in one or more areas of law—such as nonprofit, immigration, family, estate planning, or environmental law—and a commitment to using their legal skills for social good.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients or the organization in legal matters before courts, administrative bodies, or government agencies.
  • Provide legal advice and guidance on contracts, compliance, nonprofit governance, and regulatory issues.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate legal documents including agreements, policies, contracts, wills, pleadings, and motions.
  • Conduct thorough legal research using platforms such as LexisNexis or Westlaw to support case strategy and ensure compliance with state, federal, and local laws.
  • Advise clients and organizational leadership on rights, obligations, and evolving legal requirements across relevant practice areas (e.g., family law, immigration, landlord-tenant disputes, or nonprofit law).
  • Support the board of directors and executive team with governance, risk management, and policy development.
  • Maintain accurate case files and documentation while upholding the highest ethical and professional standards.
  • Stay current on legal developments that may impact the organization or its clients.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in Michigan or eligibility for pro bono practice.
  • Strong background in one or more areas of law (e.g., nonprofit, family, immigration, environmental, estate planning, or litigation).
  • Proficiency in legal research tools and techniques (LexisNexis, Westlaw).
  • Excellent legal writing, drafting, and negotiation skills.
  • Experience advising nonprofits, public interest organizations, or similar entities is preferred.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to volunteerism, equity, and community service.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible, estimated 2-5 hours per month.
  • Many tasks can be completed remotely, with occasional in-person meetings as needed.

Job Types: Part-time, Contract, Temporary, Internship

Pay: $1.00 - $2.00 per year

Expected hours: 2 per week
