Can't Afford Studios is an independent video game developer based in the United States, focused on creating games that combine excitement with a sense of community. Founded on the principle that great games come from small, passionate teams, we are working on our first title. Our design philosophy emphasizes fun, rewarding gameplay, and creating imaginative worlds that foster player self-expression and lasting communities.

Role Description

As a Volunteer Game Programmer, you’ll be a key contributor to the development of our game. You’ll collaborate closely with designers, artists, and other programmers to bring gameplay features to life, optimize performance, and ensure a smooth player experience. This is a hands-on role for someone who thrives in a creative, collaborative environment and wants to make a meaningful impact on an indie title.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement gameplay systems and mechanics
• Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code
• Debug and optimize game performance across platforms
• Collaborate with designers and artists to integrate assets and features
• Participate in team meetings and contribute to creative problem-solving
• Stay up-to-date with best practices in game development

Nice to Have

• Experience with version control software (GitHub)
• Experience with Unreal Engine 5 / Unity / Godot
• Self-motivated and determined
