About Universal Removal Defense Project

Universal Removal Defense Project (URDP) is a nonprofit human rights organization dedicated to ensuring that no person is denied access to justice because of language, culture, geography, or financial hardship. URDP is building a nationwide, language-inclusive removal defense network that combines human-centered advocacy with modern remote service delivery and multilingual technology. Our mission is to expand access to competent removal defense services for immigrants facing deportation throughout the United States.

URDP is currently pursuing Department of Justice (DOJ) Recognition and is developing a national model for remote, culturally competent immigration legal services, supported by multilingual intake systems, translation technology, and scalable case management infrastructure.

Position Summary

URDP seeks an experienced Volunteer Supervising Attorney to provide legal supervision, mentorship, and strategic guidance for our developing immigration legal services program.

This attorney will play a critical role in helping build a modern, technology-enabled removal defense organization capable of serving individuals nationwide through remote legal service delivery.

The Supervising Attorney will oversee legal quality assurance, case review, and compliance with applicable professional responsibility standards while helping shape the organization's long-term legal strategy.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced immigration attorney who believes in expanding access to justice through innovation and wishes to help build a next-generation nonprofit legal services organization from the ground up.

Primary Responsibilities - Legal Supervision

• Supervise immigration legal work performed by future DOJ-accredited representatives
• Review legal strategies and filings prior to submission
• Provide legal guidance on complex removal defense matters
• Ensure compliance with applicable ethical and professional standards

Case Review

Review and provide oversight for:

• Defensive asylum applications
• Withholding of removal claims
• Convention Against Torture (CAT) claims
• Bond motions and custody proceedings
• Motions to reopen
• Motions to reconsider
• BIA appeals
• Humanitarian immigration relief matters

Program Development

• Assist with legal program design and quality assurance
• Help develop supervision protocols
• Support DOJ Recognition and Accreditation readiness
• Assist in creation of legal training materials
• Participate in strategic planning discussions

Technology & Innovation

• Advise on technology-assisted legal service delivery
• Help evaluate ethical use of AI and translation technologies
• Assist in designing scalable remote supervision systems
• Provide feedback on digital case management workflows

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

Required

• Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
• Minimum 2 years of immigration law experience
• Significant experience representing respondents before EOIR
• Extensive experience with defensive asylum cases
• Demonstrated experience using EOIR's Electronic Case Access System (ECAS)
• Experience filing electronically before EOIR
• Experience handling Master Calendar and Individual Hearings
• Experience with BIA appeals
• Strong understanding of asylum law and country conditions evidence
• Ability to supervise legal staff remotely
• Commitment to immigrant rights and access to justice

Preferred

• 10+ years immigration litigation experience
• Former nonprofit legal services experience
• Experience supervising DOJ-accredited representatives
• Experience mentoring new attorneys or legal staff
• Experience in detained and non-detained removal defense
• Federal court immigration litigation experience
• Multiple language capabilities
• Familiarity with technology-driven legal services
