ICU nurses provide direct care to critically ill patients, involving continuous monitoring of vital signs, managing complex life-support equipment like ventilators, administering critical medications, and collaborating with healthcare teams to develop and execute care plans. They are also responsible for detailed patient record-keeping, providing crucial emotional support to patients and their families during high-stress situations, and responding to medical emergencies.
Core Responsibilities:
Patient Care & Monitoring
- Continuous Assessment: Regularly monitor patients' vital signs, neurological status, and overall physical condition to detect changes and potential complications.
- Life-Support Management: Operate and maintain specialized equipment such as ventilators, cardiac monitors, and infusion pumps to support and stabilize critically ill patients.
- Medication Administration: Administer a variety of medications, including intravenous (IV) drugs and fluids, with accuracy and precision, often at critical times
- Wound Care: Perform wound care, manage central lines, and provide other specialized treatments to prevent infections and promote healing. .
- Diagnostic Tests: Assist with or perform diagnostic tests to evaluate patient progress and inform treatment decisions.
- Multidisciplinary Teamwork: Work closely with doctors, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other specialists to develop and implement individualized patient care plans.
- Family Support & Education: Provide crucial emotional support to patients and their families during distressing times, educating them on the patient's condition and treatment.
- Documentation: Maintain meticulous and accurate records of patient care, interventions, observations, and medical histories.
- Immediate Intervention: Respond to medical emergencies, performing life-saving measures and advanced life support when necessary.
- Emergency Preparedness: Be prepared to manage complex procedures and critical events to stabilize a patient's condition.
