WARDEN - CORRECTIONS PRISON

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

Provides direction, management, supervision, and security of the corrections facility and Refuse Control. Responsible for formulating goals and compiling an annual budget for both departments and monitoring and approving expenditures. Responsible to the State of Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Board and Commissioner to house and maintain state felony convicted inmates.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.

Consults with Chief Operating Officer, board members, and other officials to review department activities, receive advice/direction, provide recommendations, and resolve problems.

Selects, hires, and trains staff of the corrections facility and the Refuse Control division; prepares schedules of work; and prepares annual budget for the department.

Ensures proper security and sanitation of facility is maintained; ensures compliance with laws, rules, Regulations, policies, and procedures for the safe operation of the facility.

Monitors and provides various facility programs and services, including food services, maintenance of facility, safety program, health service program, clothing and laundry services.

Controls inmate behavior; investigates criminal wrongdoing of inmates; searches for escaped inmates; conducts emergency transfers of inmates for security, health, mental health, and administrative reasons.

Orders and purchases necessary supplies and equipment for the staff and inmates; ensures equipment and vehicles are maintained and operational.

Selects vendors and contractors for services at the facility; communicates with contractors concerning inmate labor reimbursements.

Reviews, prepares, and submits various reports, documents and correspondence, including annual reports to the Board of Commissioners; signs monthly reports for State Department of Corrections; ensures billing are mailed; submits requests for State subsidy.

Communicates with a variety of people including department heads, Commissioners, State Department of Corrections, inmates’ families, inmates, law enforcement agencies, federal agencies, attorneys, staff, and the general public; provides public information concerning the facility.

Maintains knowledge of technical and legal aspects of correctional facilities; attends mandated training; maintains firearms certification; and maintains Georgia P.O.S.T. certification.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Criminal Justice, or a related field; supplemented by six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in a prison or jail environment or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must hold a Peace Officers Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T) certification. Must be qualified to operate a firearm. Must have and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must be approved by the Georgia Board of Corrections.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to temperature/weather extremes, toxic/poisonous agents, smoke, dust, pollen, wetness/humidity, disease/blood/bodily fluids, violence, bright/dim light, and machinery.
