Position Type: Full-Time (40 hours per week)
Location: Wastewater Treatment Facility – 320 VT Route 30S, Bomoseen, VT 05732
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Compensation: Wage based on experience, training, and other qualifications
Pay Range: ($25-$37/hour)

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, with every other weekend for lab testing (2 hours each day on those Saturdays and Sundays.

Job Summary:

The Wastewater Treatment Facility Chief Operator is responsible for the overall supervision, operation, and maintenance of the Town of Castleton’s Wastewater Treatment Facility and associated collection system infrastructure. This includes maintaining facility records, engineer blueprints, training records, and infrastructure maintenance and repair records. Working under the general supervision of the Town Manager or designated representative, the Chief Operator ensures that the facility operates in compliance with all state and federal regulations, including but not limited to discharge permits, operating permit, and OSHA/VOSHA regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications:

· Must possess a Grade 2 or higher Wastewater Operator certification as required by the State of Vermont, or have equivalent certification from another State (and accepted by the State of Vermont as equivalent to a Grade 2), and maintain such certifications through continuous education as prescribed by federal, State, and local requirements.

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Must be Hazardous Materials Operations Level certified or able to become certified in six months.
Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting up to 75 lbs and working in various weather conditions.
Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, and enter into confined or restricted spaces.

· Must have good physical strength and be able to work under adverse weather conditions, in confined spaces, and on difficult or varied terrain.

Self-starter who has the ability to work independently on assigned tasks.
Strong supervisory skills, including experience managing employees.
Good knowledge of the methods, procedures and equipment used in treatment plant operations and sewer maintenance.

Experience.

Experience and proficiency using MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and general computer skills to function effectively in an office environment.
Proficient in data input, analyzing data, creating and maintaining spreadsheets
Demonstrated experience in making recommendations aimed at improving operational efficiency, and able to communicate those needs both orally and in writing to the Town Manager and DPW Foreman.
Working with power tools, hydraulic tools, and be mechanically inclined.
Experience working from heights, working in confined spaces, and in all weather conditions.
Perform all tasks pertaining to the job as required or directed.

Desired Qualifications:

First Aid/AED/CPR certification (or ability to become qualified within 6 months).
Experience writing reports
Experience managing a budget
Experience writing personnel evaluations
Ability to operate standard maintenance tools and equipment (e.g., lawnmowers, trimmers, power tools, backhoe, chainsaw, chain hoists, winches, mid-size tractor, and 1-ton dump truck).

Working Conditions:

This position requires frequent outdoor work, which may include exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
Physical demands include standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, dragging, climbing, and lifting.
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required, particularly during busy summer months. This position requires the team member to carry a pager for emergency callouts every other week (includes every other weekend).
