Water Meter Maintenance Lead

Location: Houston, TX, USA Pay Rate: $28.07 - $34.39 per hour

CLASS SUMMARY:
The Water Meter Maintenance Lead oversees the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of water meters and related equipment. This role will lead the meter maintenance program to ensure accurate meter performance, supports billing accuracy, and maintains compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with leadership and organizational skills.

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
1.

Lead water meter maintenance program, including daily work assignments, training, and performance feedback

2.

Plan and coordinate meter installation, replacement, testing, calibration, and repair activities

3.

Ensure accurate meter readings and support investigation of high-bill or consumption discrepancy issues

4.

Inspect and troubleshoot meters, endpoints, valves, and related infrastructure

5.

Maintain records of meter work, inventory, and service history using a computerized maintenance management system and/or billing systems.

6.

Enforce safety procedures and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations

7.

Coordinate with billing, customer service, and field operations teams to resolve service issues

8.

Leads inventory control, and procurement of meters, parts, and tools. Assists with budgeting needs.

9.

Respond to customer inquiries and field issues as needed.

10.

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED and 3 years of increasingly responsible experience in water meter maintenance, utility operations or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Texas Driver's License

KNOWLEDGE:
Water Distribution or Meter Technician Certification (State or Industry)
Experience with computerized management systems (CMMS) and/or billing software
Knowledge of local utility codes and regulations.
Applicable Federal, State, and City laws and regulations.

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities
Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
Effective communication with staff, management, and customers
Ability work outdoors in varying weather conditions

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions, such as, mechanical parts, electrical currents, and vibrations; atmospheric conditions, such as fumes, odors, gases, and poor ventilation; extreme temperatures; inadequate lighting; work space-related movement restrictions; and intense noise.
