Water Sewer Maintenance Technician


JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to perform unskilled to semi-skilled work to install, maintain and repair water and sewer lines, meters, and hydrants.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Installs, maintains, and/or repairs water and sewer lines, meters, water taps, water and sewer fittings, manholes, collars and valve markers, backflow preventers, water sample stations, foot washing stations, fire hydrants, or other items as necessary; bores water lines; patches asphalt and concrete; grades land; and repairs landscaping.
  • Picks up and transports materials, tools and supplies; cleans and washes equipment and tools; performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on tools, equipment and vehicles; and notifies supervisor of needed equipment replacements and repairs.
  • Conducts pre-trip inspections including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; fuels trucks; loads and secures materials on trucks; travels to job sites; and conducts post-trip inspections.
  • Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and wears protective gear.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools and equipment to perform assigned duties, including dump trucks, pressure washers, backhoes, trenchers, track hoes, jack hammers, boring machines, bulldozers, drills, cement and asphalt cutters, shovels, and pipe wrenches.
  • Communicates with supervisor, City employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Operates assigned vehicle; operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment, including commercial grade vehicles to complete essential functions.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
  • Performs other related duties as required, requested and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; one (1) year of related experience in water and sewer maintenance.

Licenses or Certifications:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
May be required to obtain and maintain the following licenses and certifications: Class “D” Water Distribution, Backflow, Asbestos, and Flagger.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is heavy work. The employee is constantly required to move objects applying up to 20 pounds of force; frequently required to apply 30 pounds of force to move objects; and occasionally required to exert up to 100 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally requires: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, grasping, handling, hearing voices and distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, expressing ideas by the spoken word and shouting to be heard above ambient noise, visual acuity in data/color/observations/operating equipment, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed outdoors where performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, unsafe structures, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, or rude/irate customers. Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
