United Church of Christ – Weekend Janitor (Sundays)

Location: Newington, Connecticut

Schedule: Sundays, 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Pay Rate: $20.00 per hour

Position Summary

The Weekend Sexton is responsible for opening, supporting, and securing the church facilities on Sundays. This role ensures the building is safe, welcoming, and fully prepared for scheduled activities, including setting up for events, Sunday worship services, and fellowship gatherings. The Sexton also assists with light facilities oversight, hospitality support, and end-of-day shutdown procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Building Access & Security

• Open the main building and disable the security alarm upon arrival
• Unlock South and West doors by 8am ET.
• Unlock all required entrances for Sunday worship services
• Unlock second-floor lights, church office, parlor, and main office doors
• Monitor South and West doors during services
• Assist with locking and securing the building following services and coffee hour, including:
• Balcony door (2nd floor)
• Church School Office
• Fellowship Hall (north entrance)
• Main Street main entrance
• Sanctuary doors
• South M&T Bank-side doors
• West Cemetery-side doors
• Confirm all doors are locked and lights are turned off before departure
• Set the security alarm at the end of the shift

Facility & Comfort Oversight

• Check heating/temperature settings in advance to ensure comfort for Sunday services
• Monitor building conditions during events and report any issues

Kitchen & Fellowship Hall Support

• Unlock kitchen and turn on coffee pot
• Open serving window for coffee hour
• Break down and store Weight Watchers chairs
• Perform light Fellowship Hall cleanup after events
• Take trash to the dumpster as needed

Parking & Guest Assistance

• Place parking signs in the North Lot
• Monitor parking areas during services
• Assist elderly or mobility-limited guests entering the building
• Maintain a visible, helpful presence around entrances during services

Qualifications

• Dependable and punctual with the ability to work independently
• Comfortable performing light physical tasks (chairs, doors, trash removal)
• Friendly, respectful demeanor when interacting with congregants and visitors
• Ability to follow security and building procedures consistently
• Prior facilities, custodial, or church sexton experience is a plus but not required

Work Environment

This role involves walking throughout the building, using stairs, working both indoors and outdoors, and supporting a welcoming environment during worship services and community activities.

Pay: $20.00 per hour
