The primary role of the Boilermaker/Welder II is to perform inspections, fabricate, assemble, modify and perform maintenance and repairs on locomotive boilers in full compliance with FRA, NBIC, or ASME requirements as necessary. This includes tube and firebox sheet repair or replacement, staybolt replacement, and hot riveting. is to provide support towards the operations and maintenance of the DSNGRR fleet of passenger and freight cars, the DSNGRR locomotives and mechanical department inventory.

This position will report and operate out of the Durango yard however, it may include periods of travel and work in other locations.

The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated individual with the ability to work both individually and in a team environment. Candidates should have a strong understanding and ability to work with MIG, TIG and ARC welding processes and associated fabrication techniques. A high degree of value will be placed on a candidate’s fabrication abilities and ability to weld carbon steel in all positions. Applicants for the Boilermaker/Welder II position are not expected to hold any certifications however, they may be requested to demonstrate their welding skills during the interview process, and must have the ability to pass a 6G coupon weld test to ASME B31.3 standards within three months of hire. Preference will be given to candidates who have previous code welding experience and/or experience with locomotive or historical boiler repair.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate, assemble and modify boiler systems, heavy sheet metal components and parts using welding, riveting, torching, tapping, threading, bolting, lapping, and grinding.

  • Remove and install boiler tubes, flues, firebox sheets and tube sheets, repair super heater units, remove and install welded and/or threaded stay bolts, studs, and plugs.

  • Work with shop machines, tools, vehicles and equipment (including drill press, impact wrenches, power saws, grinders, acetylene torches, electric and gas welding equipment to fabricate components.

  • Layout fit and verify measurements for sheet metal work of up to 7/8” thickness.

  • Safely operate hoists and jacks to lift parts

  • Interpret English verbal/written instructions and specifications including blueprints and CAD drawings.

  • Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices and procedures; take appropriate action when conditions threaten safety or self or coworkers; ensure equipment and work area are maintained to contribute to a safe work environment.

  • Communicate with others both in writing and verbally regarding technical information, job procedures and briefings, or other work related information.

  • Other Duties as assigned.

Education, Skill & Work Experience Requirements:

  • Ability to groove weld carbon steel plate up to 7/8 inch in thickness using ASME Section IX SWPS B2.1-1-202, ER6010 Root downhill, ER7018 fill uphill.

  • Ability to pass 6G coupon test to ASME Section IX B31.3 specifications for process above within three months of hire (note: specific training will be provided onsite)

  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in welding techniques including gas, brazing, SMAW, MIG and TIG

  • Knowledge of pressure vessel welding including ASME, NBIC, and FRA requirements.

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment such as loader, forklift and tractor when necessary.

  • Ability to use a basic variety of shop and mechanical tools.

  • Relevant experience working on locomotive or historic boilers preferred.

  • Must be able to effectively communicate written and verbally with management, supervisors and staff.

  • Must possess valid drivers license

  • Ability to pass D&SNGRR preemployment and random drug screenings

  • Ability to pass Physical Capabilities Exam

  • Must have the ability to comply with D&SNGRR, OSHA, FRA safety procedures and operating rules.

  • Able to effectively work independently and in group settings, applicants must be open to change, take initiative, make meaningful contributions, and take responsibility for the quality and timely completion of one’s tasks

Work Environment:

  • Must be available to work 40 hour work weeks that may include variable shifts with overtime and potentially on holidays, and weekends.

  • Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety boots, glasses, hard hats, and hearing protection where required by company policy or circumstance.

  • Will be working work in industrial/railroad environment with periods of outdoor work in all weather conditions

  • Willingness to work in confined spaces with limited mobility.

  • Ability to lift, push, pull in excess of 50 pounds safely.

  • Extended time periods of walking and standing.
