STRUCTURAL WELDER First Shift

POSITION OVERVIEW: We're seeking a skilled Structural Steel Welder to join our fabrication team. This role focuses on fabricating and welding structural steel components with strong emphasis on quality, accuracy, and efficiency. The ideal candidate brings proven structural steel welding experience, proficiency in multiple welding processes, and the ability to work from shop drawings while maintaining high-quality standards in a fast-paced production environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Welding & Fabrication

  • Perform MIG (hardwire) and dual-shield flux core welding on structural steel components
  • Fit and weld structural steel assemblies to specifications
  • Execute welds on beams, columns, and other structural elements
  • Maintain consistent weld quality and appearance across all joints
  • Apply proper welding techniques for various positions and joint configurations
  • Adjust welding parameters to achieve optimal penetration and strength

Layout & Preparation

  • Read and interpret shop drawings and fabrication details
  • Perform basic layout work and measurements for structural components
  • Mark and measure materials accurately before cutting or welding
  • Prepare surfaces for welding including cleaning and grinding
  • Ensure proper fit-up before welding
  • Verify dimensions and alignment throughout fabrication process

Equipment Operation

  • Operate standard shop equipment including saws, drills, and grinders
  • Use hand and power tools safely and effectively
  • Perform routine maintenance on welding equipment
  • Change welding wire, gas cylinders, and consumables as needed
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition

Quality Control & Inspection

  • Inspect completed welds for quality, accuracy, and adherence to specifications
  • Verify dimensions and alignment of fabricated assemblies
  • Identify and correct defects or quality issues
  • Ensure all work meets structural welding standards
  • Document work and inspections as required

Safety & Housekeeping

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Follow all safety protocols and PPE requirements
  • Handle materials safely using proper rigging and lifting techniques
  • Follow 5S standards and housekeeping procedures
  • Report safety hazards or equipment issues promptly

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven experience welding structural steel components
  • Proficient in MIG (hardwire) welding
  • Proficient in dual-shield flux core welding
  • Ability to read and work from shop drawings and blueprints
  • Understanding of structural steel fabrication processes
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Solid work ethic and reliability
  • Physical ability to lift heavy materials and work in various positions

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • AWS (American Welding Society) welding certification
  • Experience in a production or shop fabrication environment
  • Forklift operation experience and certification
  • Material handling and rigging experience
  • Familiarity with overhead crane operation
  • Experience with additional welding processes (Stick, TIG)
  • Knowledge of structural steel industry standards

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Full-time, shop-based position

  • Exposure to welding fumes, sparks, heat, and noise
  • Working with overhead cranes and material handling equipment
