WRD Laboratory Analyst/Tech – Part-Time

The Valparaiso City Utilities Water Reclamation Department is seeking a part-time WRD Laboratory Analyst/Technician. The primary responsibility of this role is to conduct analysis on wastewater and collection system samples, assist in generating compliance reports, and maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This position reports to the WRD Laboratory/Pretreatment Administrator.

Qualifications Include:

• High school diploma or equivalency (i.e., GED).
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and essential function test.
• Possession or ability to obtain required certifications and training (e.g., First Aid/CPR, OSHA, Respirator Training).

Position Expectations Include:

• Adhering to all regulatory permits (NPDES) and the Federal Clean Water Act.
• Performing process control analysis such as TSS, TPO4, CBOD5, and E. coli.
• Maintaining laboratory databases, records, inventory, reagents, and standards.
• Operating and troubleshooting laboratory analytical instruments and equipment including calibration.
• Cleaning and maintaining lab equipment and work areas.
• Collecting, preserving, and preparing samples for both in-house and third-party testing.
• Completing calculations, recording acceptable data, and preparing documentation for compliance.
• Participating in lab QA/QC programs and SOP manual updates.
• Attending meetings, safety training, and workshops as required.
• Participating in departmental and City committees as needed.
• Performing marginal functions such as cleaning sample containers and basic lab support tasks.

Compensation:

Valparaiso City Services provides a competitive salary structure. Pay for this position is $20 per hour dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

The position is non-exempt (overtime eligible) commensurate with FLSA requirements and will work less than 30 hours per week for approximately 12 weeks.  Please note any overtime requires prior authorization from the appropriate party(ies).
