YMCA After-School Counselor - Lantrip

Position Overview:
Join a dynamic team focused on providing a safe, positive, and stimulating environment for youth in before- and after-school care or seasonal day camp programs. Support children in learning, play, and values-based development in alignment with childcare standards and the guiding principles of the YMCA: honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and faith.

Primary Duties

Activity Facilitation:
Support the coordination and delivery of developmentally appropriate, mission-driven programming both indoors and outdoors. Encourage curiosity, learning, and fun in a culturally inclusive setting.

Operational Support:
Assist in maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming program spaces by adhering to established YMCA protocols and childcare licensing rules.

Child Interaction & Oversight:
Work under the supervision of the Site Coordinator to ensure active, attentive supervision of children at all times. Promote positive behavior and model character values through daily interactions.

Team & Community Relations:
Develop and maintain respectful, communicative relationships with students, families, colleagues, and school personnel. Attend scheduled staff briefings, training workshops, and professional development activities as required.

Health & Safety Protocols:
Consistently enforce safety practices including sign-in/out procedures, incident documentation, and situational awareness. Remain alert and responsive to child behavior and safety concerns to ensure a secure environment.

Job Requirements

• At least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 6 months of experience working with children (in schools, daycares, churches, or youth programs).
• CPR, First Aid, AED, and child protection training (or willingness to obtain).
• Must be able to engage children in active programming and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
• Must meet local and state health requirements (e.g., TB clearance, immunizations).
• Must pass a criminal background check, fingerprinting, and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

• Interest in child and youth development fields.
• Previous work or volunteer experience with children (babysitting, mentoring, tutoring, etc.).
• Experience engaging with diverse populations is a plus.

Work Hours

• After School Care: Part-time hours during school days, generally 2:30 PM – 6:30 PM.
• Camp Programs: Seasonal full-time shifts during holiday breaks and summer (varied time slots available).
• Attendance at scheduled staff meetings, special events, and trainings is required with prior notice.

Additional Notes

• Some travel between program sites may be necessary.
• Physical activity is a routine part of the job, including occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
