Job Description
Title: Children’s Librarian
Preferred Qualifications: MLIS, bachelor’s degree, or significant experience working with children.
Nature of Responsibility: The children’s librarian must have a positive and helpful attitude and a neat appearance. The children’s librarian plays a primary role in scheduling, planning, marketing, and executing children’s programming. The children’s librarian is also responsible, in cooperation with the Library Director, for selecting materials for the children’s collection and for weeding as needed. Responsibilities for this position also include reference service, circulation, and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Schedule: Full time. Schedule is generally Monday-Friday 9-5 with one weeknight shift a week. Schedule could include weekends as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Schedule, plan, and execute children’s programming at regular intervals throughout the year
· Oversee children’s summer reading program (order supplies, schedule, plan and execute)
· Oversee the signage and displays in the children’s department
· Provide tours and special programs for groups as needed
· Create promotional materials for children’s programming and share with staff member(s) responsible for maintaining the library’s website and social media accounts
· Select materials and weed and maintain the children’s collection
· Provide reader advisory services to children and parents seeking reading recommendations
· Maintain and track story kits and IDNR kits
· Circulation duties (check books in and out, collect fines, renew materials, register new patrons, answer phone, provide general assistance)
· Open and Closing the library as needed
· Act as backup for other positions as needed
· Attends outreach events and forms connections with other organizations and groups in the community to promote library services.
Abilities, Skills and Knowledge:
· The ability to organize and prioritize work
· Must have the ability to work well with children, both individually and in groups and the ability to communicate effectively with parents and caregivers
· Must be familiar with a wide variety of children’s literature, trends, and interests
· Basic computer skills are required including word processing, simple spreadsheets and general database searching
· Must have an ability and a willingness to learn new computer skills
· Good communication skills are necessary to interact with library users, coworkers, and the general public
· Must have the ability to learn and use the circulation system
· Must have the ability to stand, squat, bend, reach, climb, and lift at least 25 pounds
